Samuel ben Ammi

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

Palestinian amora of the beginning of the fourth century. He is known through his controversies with other scholars. He contended, for instance, that 2 Chronicles 13:17 should be interpreted as meaning that King Abijah of Judea allowed the bodies of the fallen Israelites to remain exposed until the faces had become unrecognizable, in order that their widows might be prevented from remarrying (Yer. Yeb. 15c; Gen. R. ,; Ruth R. ).
