Verses 1-22

A Thanksgiving Sacrifice

The flood lasted one year and ten days ( Gen_7:11 ; Gen_8:14 ). Noah's first act on the renewed earth was to offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving. It could be viewed as a sacrifice dedicating the renewed earth to God. It also served as a reminder of man's reliance upon God. Following the sacrifice, God made a further covenant with Noah. He said he would never again destroy the earth with water. He placed a rainbow in the sky as a perpetual reminder of the promise. God did this because he was pleased with Noah's sacrifice ( Gen_8:20-22 ; Gen_9:8-17 ).
