A Dene tribe, one of the northernmost redskins in America, inhabiting a region that extends from Fort Norman, on the Mackenzie, west of Great Bear Lake to the confines of the Eskimos not far from the Arctic Ocean. They are a timid and kindly people but very superstitious. The first Hare Indian was baptized by Father Belcourt, a famous missionary of the Red River Settlement, 1839. In 1859, his tribe was first evangelized by Father Grollier, a French Oblate of Mary Immaculate. Today they do not number more than 600 and these are all Catholics.
