General of the Franciscans; born Faversham, England; died Anagni, Italy, 1243. He had already gained fame as a lecturer in the University of Paris when he entered the Order of Friars Minor, c1225 He was one of the Friars sent by the Holy See to negotiate for the reunion of the Greek and Latin Churches. The revision of the Roman Breviary, 1241, is chiefly his work. He was an energetic opponent of Brother Elias, and when elected general rectified the disorders caused among the friars by Elias.
