British surgeon and pathologist. Born January 11, 1814 at Yarmouth, England; died 1899. Discovered the Trichina spiralis, a parasite found in human muscles. Discovered the heart and bone diseases designated by his name. Did important microscopic pathological research, particularly on tumors. One of the founders of scientific medical pathology. Wrote Lectures on Tumours (1851) and Lectures on Surgical Pathology (1853).
