Saints, martyrs (Antioch, 168 B.C. ). The most notable martyrs of the persecution propagated by Antiochus in his effort to hellenize Jerusalem, were Eleazar, an old man, chief of the scribes, seven brothers, and their mother Samona. They are known as the Machabees because they suffered death during the era of the Machabee heroes. Their story is recounted in 1,2Machabees. Their relics are now preserved partly in San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, and at Cologne. Feast, Roman Calendar, August 1,.
