Catholic journalist and poet. Born on January 1, 1839 in Baltimore, Maryland; died on January 15, 1908 in Augusta, Georgia. Wrote Maryland, My Maryland, which was taken up as a war hymn of the Confederacy, and for which he has been called "Poet Laureate of the Lost Cause". Travelled through South America and the West Indies. Washington correspondent for the Augusta Chronicle. His writings had a religious spirit.
