^(C1)As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples ^(*)said to Him, "Teacher, look! ^(F1)What wonderful stones and ^(F1)what wonderful buildings!"

And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? ^(C1)Not one stone will be left upon another, which will not be torn down."

As He was sitting on ^(C1)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, ^(C2)Peter, ^(F1)James, John, and Andrew were questioning Him privately,

"Tell us, when will these things come about, and what will be the ^(F1)sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?"

And Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one misleads you.

"Many will come in My name, saying, '^(C1)I am He!' and they will mislead many.

"When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end.

"For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are only the beginning of birth pains.

"But ^(F1)be on your guard; for they will ^(C1)hand you over to the ^(F2)courts, and you will be flogged ^(C1)in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.

"^(C1)And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations.

"^(C1)And when they ^(F1)arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit.

"And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and ^(F1)have them put to death.

"And ^(C1)you will be hated by everyone because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

"Now ^(C1)when you see the ^(C2)ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be—^(F1)let the ^(F2)reader understand—then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.

"^(F1)(C1)Whoever is on the ^(F2)housetop must not go down, nor go in to get anything out of his house.

"And ^(F1)whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

"But woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days!

"Moreover, pray that it will not happen in winter.

"For those days will be such a time of tribulation as has not occurred ^(C1)since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will again.

"And if the Lord had not shortened those days, no ^(F1)life would have been saved; but for the sake of the ^(F2)elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

"And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the ^(F1)Christ'; or, 'Look, there He is'; do not believe it;

for false christs and ^(C1)false prophets will arise, and will provide ^(C2)signs and ^(C2)wonders, in order to mislead, if possible, the elect.

"But beware; I have told you everything in advance.

"But in those days, after that tribulation, ^(C1)THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT,

^(C1)AND THE STARS WILL BE FALLING from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.

"And then they will see ^(C1)THE SON OF MAN ^(C2)COMING IN CLOUDS with great power and glory.

"And then He will send forth the angels, and ^(C1)will gather together His ^(F1)elect from the four winds, ^(C2)from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.

"Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near.

"So you too, when you see these things happening, ^(F1)recognize that ^(F2)He is near, right at the ^(F3)door.

"Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

"^(C1)But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

"Watch out, ^(C1)stay alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is.

"^(C1)It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and ^(F1)putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert.

"Therefore, ^(C1)stay alert—for you do not know when the ^(F1)master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or ^(C2)when the rooster crows, or ^(C3)in the morning—

so that he does not come suddenly and find you ^(C1)asleep.

"What I say to you I say to all: '^(C1)Stay alert!'"

^(C1)Now ^(C2)the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes ^(C3)were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him;

for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people."

^(C1)While He was in ^(C2)Bethany at the home of Simon ^(F1)the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very ^(C3)expensive perfume of pure ^(F2)nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head.

But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted?

"For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred ^(F1)denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.

But Jesus said, "Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me.

"For you always have ^(C1)the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

"She has done what she could; ^(C1)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

"Truly I say to you, ^(C1)wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her."

^(C1)Then Judas Iscariot, ^(C2)who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to ^(F1)betray Him to them.

They were delighted when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

^(C1)On the first day of ^(F1)(C2)Unleavened Bread, when ^(F2)the Passover lamb was being ^(C3)sacrificed, His disciples ^(*)said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?"

And He ^(*)sent two of His disciples and ^(*)said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him;

and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My ^(C1)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'

"And he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready; prepare for us there."

The disciples left and came to the city, and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

^(C1)When it was evening He ^(*)came with the twelve.

And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will ^(F1)betray Me—^(F2)one who is eating with Me."

They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?"

But He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl.

"For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man ^(F1)by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good ^(F2)for that man if he had not been born."

^(C1)While they were eating, He took some bread, and ^(F1)after a ^(C2)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."

And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

And He said to them, "This is My ^(C1)blood of the ^(C2)covenant, which is being poured out for many.

"Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God."

^(C1)And after singing a ^(F1)hymn, they went out to ^(C2)the Mount of Olives.

^(C1)And Jesus ^(*)said to them, "You will all ^(F1)fall away, because it is written: '^(C2)I WILL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP WILL BE SCATTERED.'

"But after I am raised, ^(C1)I will go ahead of you to Galilee."

But Peter said to Him, "Even if they all ^(F1)fall away, yet I will not!"

And Jesus ^(*)said to him, "Truly I say to you, that ^(F1)(C1)this very night, before ^(C2)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times."

But ^(F1)Peter repeatedly said insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing as well.

^(C1)They ^(*)came to a place named ^(F1)Gethsemane; and He ^(*)said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed."

And He ^(*)took with Him Peter, ^(F1)James, and John, and began to be very ^(C1)distressed and troubled.

And He ^(*)said to them, "^(C1)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^(F1)keep watch."

And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, ^(C1)the hour might ^(F1)pass Him by.

And He was saying, "^(C1)Abba! ^(F1)Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; ^(C2)yet not what I will, but what You will."

And He ^(*)came and ^(*)found them sleeping, and ^(*)said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not ^(F1)keep watch for one hour?

"^(F1)(C1)Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

And again He went away and prayed, saying the same ^(F1)words.

And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him.

And He ^(*)came the third time, and ^(*)said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. ^(C1)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being ^(F1)betrayed into the hands of sinners.

"Get up, let's go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!"

^(C1)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, ^(*)came up, ^(F1)accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.

Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away ^(F1)under guard."

And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and ^(*)said, "^(C1)Rabbi!" and kissed Him.

And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him.

But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and ^(F1)cut off his ear.

And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt?

"Every day I was with you ^(C1)within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled."

And ^(F1)His disciples all left Him and fled.

A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they ^(*)seized him.

But he ^(F1)pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

^(C1)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes ^(*)gathered together.

And Peter had followed Him at a distance, ^(C1)right into ^(C2)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the ^(F1)officers and ^(C3)warming himself at the ^(F2)fire.

Now the chief priests and the entire ^(F1)(C1)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.

For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.

And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying,

"We heard Him say, '^(C1)I will destroy this ^(F1)temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.'"

And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.

And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?"

^(C1)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. ^(C2)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and ^(*)said to Him, "Are You the ^(F1)Christ, the Son of ^(F2)the Blessed One?"

And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see ^(C1)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and ^(C2)coming with the clouds of heaven."

^(C1)Tearing his clothes, the high priest ^(*)said, "What further need do we have of witnesses?

"You have heard the ^(C1)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.

And some began to ^(C1)spit on Him, and ^(F1)(C2)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, "^(C3)Prophesy!" Then the officers took custody of Him ^(F2)and slapped Him in the face.

^(C1)And while Peter was below in ^(C2)the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest ^(*)came,

and seeing Peter ^(C1)warming himself, she looked at him and ^(*)said, "You were with Jesus the ^(C2)Nazarene as well."

But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he ^(C1)went out onto the ^(F1)porch.^(F2)

The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them!"

But again ^(C1)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "You really are one of them, ^(C2)for you are a Galilean as well."

But he began to ^(F1)curse himself and to swear, "I do not know this Man of whom you speak!"

And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before ^(C1)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And ^(F1)he hurried on and began to weep.

^(C1)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire ^(F1)(C2)Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate.

^(C1)Pilate questioned Him: "So You are the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say."

And the chief priests started accusing Him ^(F1)of many things.

But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!"

But Jesus ^(C1)said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

^(C1)Now at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt.

And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"

For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd ^(C1)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

And responding again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

They shouted ^(F1)back, "Crucify Him!"

But Pilate said to them, "Why, what ^(F1)evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"

Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus ^(C1)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

^(C1)Now the soldiers took Him away into ^(C2)the ^(F1)palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they ^(*)called together the whole Roman ^(F2)(C3)cohort.

And they ^(*)dressed Him in ^(F1)purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;

and they began saluting Him: "Hail, King of the Jews!"

And they repeatedly beat His head with a ^(F1)reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.

And after they had mocked Him, they took the ^(F1)purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they ^(*)led Him out to crucify Him.

^(C1)And they ^(*)compelled a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and ^(C2)Rufus), to carry His cross.

^(C1)Then they ^(*)brought Him to the place ^(C2)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

And they tried to give Him ^(C1)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.

And they ^(*)crucified Him, and ^(*)(C1)divided up His garments among themselves, casting ^(F1)lots for them to decide ^(F2)what each man would take.

Now it was the ^(F1)(C1)third hour ^(F2)when they crucified Him.

The inscription of the charge against Him ^(F1)read, "^(C1)THE KING OF THE JEWS."

And they ^(*)crucified two ^(F1)rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.^(F2)

Those passing by were ^(F1)hurling abuse at Him, ^(C1)shaking their heads and saying, "Ha! You who are going to ^(C2)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

save Yourself by coming down from the cross!"

In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "^(C1)He saved others; ^(F1)He cannot save Himself!

"Let this Christ, ^(C1)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" ^(C2)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

^(C1)When the ^(F1)(C2)sixth hour came, darkness ^(F2)fell over the whole land until the ^(F3)(C2)ninth hour.

At the ^(F1)(C1)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "^(C2)ELOI, ELOI, LEMA SABAKTANEI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, "Look! He is calling for Elijah!"

And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "^(F1)Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down."

^(C1)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and ^(F1)died.

^(C1)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

^(C1)And when the centurion, who was standing ^(F1)right in front of Him, saw that He ^(F2)died in this way, he said, "Truly this Man was ^(F3)the Son of God!"

^(C1)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of ^(F1)James ^(C2)the ^(F2)Less and Joses, and ^(C3)Salome.

When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and ^(C1)serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

^(C1)When evening had already come, since it was ^(C2)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

Joseph of Arimathea came, a ^(C1)prominent member of the Council, who was himself also ^(C2)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he ^(C3)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.

And after learning this from ^(C1)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

^(C1)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

^(C1)When the Sabbath was over, ^(C2)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of ^(F1)James, and Salome ^(C3)bought spices so that they might come and anoint Him.

And very early on the first day of the week, they ^(*)came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away ^(C1)the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?"

And looking up, they ^(*)noticed that the stone had been rolled away; ^(F1)for it was extremely large.

And ^(C1)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they ^(C2)were amazed.

But he ^(*)said to them, "^(C1)Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the ^(C2)Nazarene, who has been crucified. ^(C3)He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him.

"But go, tell His disciples and Peter, '^(C1)He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"

And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

[[^(F1)Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to ^(C1)Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.

^(C1)She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.

And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, ^(C1)they refused to believe it.

Now after that, ^(C1)He appeared in a different form ^(C2)to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.

And they went away and reported it to the rest, but they ^(C1)did not believe them, either.

Later ^(C1)He appeared ^(C2)to the eleven disciples themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reprimanded them for their ^(C3)unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen from the dead.

And He said to them, "^(C1)Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

"^(C1)The one who has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but the one who has not believed will be condemned.

"These signs will accompany those who have believed: ^(C1)in My name they will cast out demons, they will ^(C2)speak with new tongues;

they will ^(C1)pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will ^(C2)lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then, when the Lord Jesus had ^(C1)spoken to them, He ^(C2)was received up into heaven and ^(C3)sat down at the right hand of God.

And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.]] [[^(F1)And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.]]
