Catholic physicist, born Chatillon-sur-Loing, France, 1788; died Paris, France, 1878. He devoted himself to the study of electricity, inventing a constant cell, a differential galvanometer to measure electrical resistances, and an electric thermometer. He wrote several important works and contributed articles to scientific reviews. Known as the founder of the science of electro-chemistry.
