Those renunciations required of an adult candidate for Baptism just before the sacrament is conferred; in the case of an infant, they are made in his name by the sponsors. According to the Roman Ritual, three questions are addressed to the person to be baptized: "Dost thou renounce Satan? And all his works? And all his pomps?" To each of these the person or his sponsor replies "I do renounce." The practise of renewing the baptismal promises is more or less widespread, particularly at the closing of a mission, or after receiving First Communion or the Sacrament of Confirmation.
