Tauwitz, Eduard
The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia
or German composer; born Jan. 21, 1812, at Glatz; died July 26, 1894, at Prague. While studying law at the University of Breslau he devoted himself to music under the direction of Wolf and Mosovius. At the same time he took charge of the Akademische Gesangverein. Having decided not to follow a juridical career, he left Breslau in 1837 to accept a call to Wilna as director of the orchestra of the theater there. In 1840 he went in the same capacity to Riga, but in 1843 returned to Breslau, and two years later accepted a similar position in Prague, where he also taught music. On the death of Leopold Zwonar he succeeded him as the director of the Sophienakademie.
Tauwitz was a very prolific composer of songs; he wrote in addition two operettas, "Schmolke und Bakel" and "Bramante." Of his songs the following are worthy of special mention: "Zwölf Soldatenlieder für Vier- und Fünfstimmigen Männergesang" and "Zweiundzwanzig Banner- und Schwertlieder für Vierstimmigen Münnergesang."
