2 Chronicles 22

Chapter 22

Ahaziah King of Judah(a)(b)

1 The people(c) of Jerusalem(d) made Ahaziah, Jehoram's youngest son, king in his place, since the raiders,(e) who came with the Arabs into the camp, had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.

2 Ahaziah was twenty-two[a] years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother's name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri.

3 He too followed(f) the ways of the house of Ahab,(g) for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly. 4 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord , as the house of Ahab had done, for after his father's death they became his advisers, to his undoing. 5 He also followed their counsel when he went with Joram[b] son of Ahab king of Israel to wage war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(h) The Arameans wounded Joram; 6 so he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(i) king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah[d] son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab because he had been wounded.

7 Through Ahaziah's(j) visit to Joram, God brought about Ahaziah's downfall. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out with Joram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. 8 While Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab,(k) he found the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah's relatives, who had been attending Ahaziah, and he killed them. 9 He then went in search of Ahaziah, and his men captured him while he was hiding(l) in Samaria. He was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, "He was a son of Jehoshaphat, who sought(m) the Lord with all his heart." So there was no one in the house of Ahaziah powerful enough to retain the kingdom.

Athaliah and Joash(n)

10 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehosheba,[e] the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehosheba,[f] the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada, was Ahaziah's sister, she hid the child from Athaliah so she could not kill him. 12 He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

Joel 1

Chapter 1

1 The word of the Lord that came(a) to Joel(b) son of Pethuel.

An Invasion of Locusts

2 Hear this,(c) you elders;(d)
     listen, all who live in the land.(e)
Has anything like this ever happened in your days
     or in the days of your ancestors?(f)
3 Tell it to your children,(g)
     and let your children tell it to their children,
     and their children to the next generation.(h)
4 What the locust(i) swarm has left
     the great locusts have eaten;
what the great locusts have left
     the young locusts have eaten;
what the young locusts have left(j)
     other locusts[a] have eaten.(k)

5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
     Wail, all you drinkers of wine;(l)
wail because of the new wine,
     for it has been snatched(m) from your lips.
6 A nation has invaded my land,
     a mighty army without number;(n)
it has the teeth(o) of a lion,
     the fangs of a lioness.
7 It has laid waste(p) my vines
     and ruined my fig trees.(q)
It has stripped off their bark
     and thrown it away,
     leaving their branches white.

8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth(r)
     grieving for the betrothed of her youth.
9 Grain offerings and drink offerings(s)
     are cut off from the house of the Lord .
The priests are in mourning,(t)
     those who minister before the Lord .
10 The fields are ruined,
     the ground is dried up;(u)
the grain is destroyed,
     the new wine(v) is dried up,
     the olive oil fails.(w)

11 Despair, you farmers,(x)
     wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,(y)
     because the harvest of the field is destroyed.(z)
12 The vine is dried up
     and the fig tree is withered;(aa)
the pomegranate,(ab) the palm and the apple[b] tree—
     all the trees of the field—are dried up.(ac)
Surely the people's joy
     is withered away.

A Call to Lamentation

13 Put on sackcloth,(ad) you priests, and mourn;
     wail, you who minister(ae) before the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
     you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings(af)
     are withheld from the house of your God.
14 Declare a holy fast;(ag)
     call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
     and all who live in the land(ah)
to the house of the Lord your God,
     and cry out(ai) to the Lord .(aj)

15 Alas for that(ak) day!
     For the day of the Lord (al) is near;
     it will come like destruction from the Almighty.[c](am)

16 Has not the food been cut off(an)
     before our very eyes—
joy and gladness(ao)
     from the house of our God?(ap)
17 The seeds are shriveled
     beneath the clods.[d](aq)
The storehouses are in ruins,
     the granaries have been broken down,
     for the grain has dried up.
18 How the cattle moan!
     The herds mill about
because they have no pasture;(ar)
     even the flocks of sheep are suffering.(as)

19 To you, Lord , I call,(at)
     for fire(au) has devoured the pastures(av) in the wilderness
     and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.
20 Even the wild animals pant for you;(aw)
     the streams of water have dried up(ax)
     and fire has devoured the pastures(ay) in the wilderness.

2 Corinthians 9

Chapter 9

1 There is no need(a) for me to write to you about this service(b) to the Lord's people.(c) 2 For I know your eagerness to help,(d) and I have been boasting(e) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(f) you in Achaia(g) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. 3 But I am sending the brothers(h) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(i) 4 For if any Macedonians(j) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. 5 So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(k) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(l) not as one grudgingly given.(m)

Generosity Encouraged

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(n) 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(o) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(p) for God loves a cheerful giver.(q) 8 And God is able(r) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(s) you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:

"They have freely scattered their gifts(t) to the poor;
     their righteousness endures forever."[a](u)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(v) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(w) 11 You will be enriched(x) in every way so that you can be generous(y) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(z)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(aa) of the Lord's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(ab) 13 Because of the service(ac) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(ad) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(ae) of the gospel of Christ,(af) and for your generosity(ag) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(ah) for his indescribable gift!(ai)
