NASNew American Standard Bible
KJVKing James Version
'Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave's service.
Leviticus 25:39
And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:
'He shall be with you as a hired worker, as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee.
Leviticus 25:40
But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile.
'He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers.
Leviticus 25:41
And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.
'For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale.
Leviticus 25:42
For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.
'You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.
Leviticus 25:43
Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
'As for your male and female slaves whom you may have—you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you.
Leviticus 25:44
Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
'You may also acquire them from the sons of the foreign residents who reside among you, and from their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession.
Leviticus 25:45
Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
'You may also pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another.
Leviticus 25:46
And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
'Now if the means of a stranger or of a foreign resident with you becomes sufficient, and a countryman of yours becomes poor in relation to him and sells himself to a stranger who is residing with you, or to the descendants of a stranger's family,
Leviticus 25:47
And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger's family:
then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him,
Leviticus 25:48
After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:
or his uncle, or his uncle's son may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.
Leviticus 25:49
Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself.
'He then, with his purchaser, shall calculate from the year when he sold himself to him up to the year of jubilee; and the price of his sale shall correspond to the number of years calculated. It is like the days of a hired worker that he will be with him.
Leviticus 25:50
And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him.
'If there are still many years remaining, he shall refund part of his purchase price in proportion to them for his own redemption;
Leviticus 25:51
If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for.
but if few years remain until the year of jubilee, he shall so calculate with him. In proportion to his years he is to refund the amount for his redemption.
Leviticus 25:52
And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption.
'He shall be with him like a worker hired year by year; he shall not rule over him with severity in your sight.
Leviticus 25:53
And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight.
'Even if he is not redeemed by these means, he shall still leave in the year of jubilee, he and his sons with him.
Leviticus 25:54
And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.
'For the sons of Israel are My servants; they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 25:55
For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
