Why do you boast in evil, you mighty man? The faithfulness of God endures all day long.
Psalms 52:1
Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
Psalms 52:2
The tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
You love evil more than good, Lies more than speaking what is right. Selah
Psalms 52:3
Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
You love all words that devour, You deceitful tongue.
Psalms 52:4
Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
Psalms 52:5
God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
The righteous will see and fear, And they will laugh at him, saying,
Psalms 52:6
The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
"Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches And was strong in his evil desire."
Psalms 52:7
Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the faithfulness of God forever and ever.
Psalms 52:8
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
I will praise You forever, because You have done it, And I will wait on Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your godly ones.
Psalms 52:9
I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.
Then Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered. Now Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing in front of him.
1 Samuel 22:6
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)
Saul said to his servants who were standing in front of him, "Hear now, you Benjaminites! Will the son of Jesse really give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?
1 Samuel 22:7
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
"For all of you have conspired against me so that there is no one who informs me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who cares about me or informs me that my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in ambush, as it is this day."
1 Samuel 22:8
That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Then Doeg the Edomite, who was standing in front of the servants of Saul, responded and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
1 Samuel 22:9
Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
"And he inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."
1 Samuel 22:10
And he enquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
Then the king sent a messenger to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's household, the priests who were in Nob; and all of them came to the king.
1 Samuel 22:11
Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
Saul said, "Listen now, son of Ahitub." And he replied, "Here I am, my lord."
1 Samuel 22:12
And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
Saul then said to him, "Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, so that he would rise up against me by lying in ambush as it is this day?"
1 Samuel 22:13
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king's own son-in-law, who is commander over your bodyguard, and is honored in your house?
1 Samuel 22:14
Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
"Did I just begin to inquire of God for him today? Far be it from me! Do not let the king impute anything against his servant or against any of the household of my father, because your servant knows nothing at all of this whole affair."
1 Samuel 22:15
Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
But the king said, "You shall certainly die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's household!"
1 Samuel 22:16
And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.
And the king said to the guards who were attending him, "Turn around and put the priests of the LORD to death, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not inform me." But the servants of the king were unwilling to reach out with their hands to attack the priests of the LORD.
1 Samuel 22:17
And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord : because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord .
Then the king said to Doeg, "You, turn around and attack the priests!" And Doeg the Edomite turned around and attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.
1 Samuel 22:18
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.
He also struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; he also struck oxen, donkeys, and sheep with the edge of the sword.
1 Samuel 22:19
And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
But one son of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to David.
1 Samuel 22:20
And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
Abiathar informed David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.
1 Samuel 22:21
And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord 's priests.
Then David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would certainly tell Saul. I myself have turned against every person in your father's household.
1 Samuel 22:22
And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.
"Stay with me; do not be afraid, even though he who is seeking my life is seeking your life. For you are safe with me."
1 Samuel 22:23
Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
