As the king who led Persia to its conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, Cyrus was an important figure in helping to bring God’s purposes for Israel to fulfilment (Isaiah 45:1). It was Cyrus who gave the captive Jews permission to return to their homeland and rebuild their national life and religion (Ezra 1:1-4). (For details see EZRA; PERSIA.)
