Bridgeway Bible Dictionary
As the king who led Persia to its conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, Cyrus was an important figure in helping to bring God’s purposes for Israel to fulfilment (Isaiah 45:1). It was Cyrus who gave the captive Jews permission to return to their homeland and rebuild their national life and religion (Ezra 1:1-4). (For details see ; .)
