1) a priest murdered by Doeg at Saul’s command, for supposedly assisting David
2) a Hittite warrior under David
אֲחִימֶלֶךְ (“brother of the king”), [Ahimelech], pr.n.
(1) a priest living ar Nob, the father of Abiathar, the intimate friend of David (1 Samuel 21:2, 20:9 Psalms 52:2), and therefore slain by Saul. Different from this apparently may be
(2) Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, one of the two high priests in the time of David, 2 Samuel 8:17; 1 Chronicles 24:3, 1 Chronicles 24:6, 31 1 Chronicles 24:31. Korb, however (Winer Theol. Journal IV. p. 295), supposes, with a great deal of probability, that in 2 Samuel 8:17, for “Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar,” we should read, “Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech;” from this erroneous reading he supposes that a mistake was introduced into the Chronicles.
