I only want to work with actors that really get it and make it work. I didn't want it to be a star-driven thing anymore.

I suddenly realized that comedy, for me, was just being honest, and playing it for real. I've seen so many wonderful actors who turn into creatures from another planet when they're told they are supposed to be playing comedy.

Actors worry about bad breath, weight, receding hairlines and why their leading lady looks like their daughter.

It confirms for me that we did something on Days that meant something. We had our ups and downs, but Missy and I and some of the other actors, created something that was really memorable.

It was one of the great chances in my life to become a Dumont actor.

To be a Dumont actor was considered to be a great honor for an actor, yet it also had its disadvantages.

From that moment on I knew my profession in life was and has remained until today an actor's life.

Directors and producers were afraid of a Dumont actor while at the same time they admired him.

A Dumont actor was considered to be too stilted - the way we Dumont actors used to speak.

My dream as a youngster was to be like Olivier. To be a great stage actor. To be a great Shakespearean actor. To me that is the Olympics of acting.

My work is to reach people with ideas, hopes, dreams, encouragement, insight, and revelation. That's what an actor wants to do.

Not so much in Canada, but certainly in the US, as I'm sure you know, money is all, and if they can get another 26 programs of the same thing even though it advances the culture or those actor's careers not at all it doesn't matter.

Knowing who the actors were as you were designing them helped, with Catherine's beauty and Renee's frailty, they directed me visually just by who they were.

The reward is that you can actually create a world separate from reality with a story, actors, music, and camera design. When it works it can entertain, move people and teach us all.

And so I've always been fascinated by the technical end of theater, and a lot of my closest friends are not actors, but in the other end of the business.

And my father, being a good Swiss puritan, always really insisted that if I was going to be an actor, I shouldn't just be an actor, I should know about the whole process.

I was not a trained actor.

When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise.

We film in front of a live audience, and I was a theater actor before I got into television, so I like that.

I think, being an actor, it's just a relief every time you get a part.
