For behold, I will command, and I will scatter the house of Israel among all nations as they sift wheat in a sieve, but not even the smallest grain of it shall fall upon the ground.

For they shall possess the remnant of Edom, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the LORD who does these things.

THE vision of Obadiah: Thus says the LORD God concerning Edom: We have heard a rumor from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle.

They have driven you to the border; all the men of your confederacy have deceived you and prevailed against you; the men who were at peace with you and who ate your bread have laid an ambush for you, because Esau has no understanding in him.

Because of the slaughter and because of the violence against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off for ever.

But you should not have looked for the day of your brothers disaster, in the day when he was afflicted by strangers; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; nor should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

For the day of the LORD is near upon all nations; as you have done, it shall be done to you; your rewards shall return upon your own head.

For as you have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall be confounded and troubled, and they shall be as though they had not been.

And the house of Jacob shall be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them and devour them; and there shall be no fugitive remaining to the house of Esau; for the LORD has spoken it.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Then they said to him, Tell us for what cause this evil has come upon us; what is your occupation? And from what place do you come? What is your country? And of what people are you?

Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, What have you done? For the men knew that he had fled from the presence of the LORD.

And when he had told them everything, then they said to him, What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us? For behold, the sea continues to be more tempestuous against us.

Jonah said to them, Take me up and cast me into the sea, so that the sea may be calm to you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to the land; but they could not; for the sea became more tempestuous against them.

Therefore they cried to the LORD and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, let us not perish for this mans life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou art the LORD and hast done as it pleased thee.

For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the sea; and the flood compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves have passed over me.

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth shut up its bars against me for ever; yet thou hast brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay the things that I have vowed, as a reward for the LORD.
