Now he got up that same night and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his eleven children, and crossed the shallow place of the Jabbok.
Genesis 32:22
And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
Genesis 32:23
And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
Genesis 32:24
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
When the man saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
Genesis 32:25
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
Genesis 32:26
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."
Genesis 32:27
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
Then he said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed."
Genesis 32:28
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
And Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.
Genesis 32:29
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared."
Genesis 32:30
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his hip.
Genesis 32:31
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip which is on the socket of the hip, because he touched the socket of Jacob's hip in the tendon of the hip.
Genesis 32:32
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
