Remember, LORD, what has come upon us; Look, and see our disgrace!
Lamentations 5:1
Remember, O Lord , what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, Our houses to foreigners.
Lamentations 5:2
Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
We have become orphans, without a father; Our mothers are like widows.
Lamentations 5:3
We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.
We have to pay for our drinking water, Our wood comes to us at a price.
Lamentations 5:4
We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.
Our pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, we are given no rest.
Lamentations 5:5
Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.
We have submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
Lamentations 5:6
We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.
Our fathers sinned, and are gone; It is we who have been burdened with the punishment for their wrongdoings.
Lamentations 5:7
Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.
Slaves rule over us; There is no one to rescue us from their hand.
Lamentations 5:8
Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.
We get our bread at the risk of our lives Because of the sword in the wilderness.
Lamentations 5:9
We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.
Our skin has become as hot as an oven, Because of the ravages of hunger.
Lamentations 5:10
Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.
They violated the women in Zion, The virgins in the cities of Judah.
Lamentations 5:11
They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah.
Leaders were hung by their hands; Elders were not respected.
Lamentations 5:12
Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured.
Young men worked at the grinding mill, And youths staggered under loads of wood.
Lamentations 5:13
They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.
Elders are absent from the gate, Young men from their music.
Lamentations 5:14
The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.
The joy of our hearts has ended; Our dancing has been turned into mourning.
Lamentations 5:15
The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head; Woe to us, for we have sinned!
Lamentations 5:16
The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!
Because of this our heart is faint, Because of these things our eyes are dim;
Lamentations 5:17
For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.
Because of Mount Zion which lies desolate, Jackals prowl in it.
Lamentations 5:18
Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.
You, LORD, rule forever; Your throne is from generation to generation.
Lamentations 5:19
Thou, O Lord , remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.
Why will You forget us forever? Why do You abandon us for so long?
Lamentations 5:20
Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?
Restore us to You, LORD, so that we may be restored; Renew our days as of old,
Lamentations 5:21
Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord , and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
Unless You have utterly rejected us And are exceedingly angry with us.
Lamentations 5:22
But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us.
