Now when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had frustrated their plan, then all of us returned to the wall, each one to his work.
Nehemiah 4:15
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
And from that day on, half of my servants carried on the work while half of them kept hold of the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the captains were behind all the house of Judah.
Nehemiah 4:16
And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
Those who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens carried with one hand doing the work, and the other keeping hold of a weapon.
Nehemiah 4:17
They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
As for the builders, each wore his sword strapped to his waist as he built, while the trumpeter stood near me.
Nehemiah 4:18
For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
And I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, "The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.
Nehemiah 4:19
And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
"At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, assemble to us there. Our God will fight for us."
Nehemiah 4:20
In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
So we carried on the work with half of them holding spears from dawn until the stars appeared.
Nehemiah 4:21
So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
At that time I also said to the people, "Each man with his servant shall spend the night within Jerusalem, so that they may be a guard for us by night and a laborer by day."
Nehemiah 4:22
Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
So neither I, my brothers, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed meā€”none of us removed our clothes; each took his weapon even to the water.
Nehemiah 4:23
So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
