 [עָקַר] verb denominative pluck or root up

Qal Infinitive construct לַעֲקוֺר with accusative Ecclesiastes 3:2 (opposed to נָטַע).

Niph`al Imperfect 3 feminine singular עֶקְרוֺן תֵּעָקֵר Zephaniah 2:4 (word-play).

עִקֵּר verbPi`eldenom (from עֵקַר or other like word = ( root-sinew), hamstring; — hamstring horses (on Arabic funeral usage, with camel and horse see We Heid. 2,181): Perfect 3 masculine singular ׳ע Joshua 11:9, Imperfect 3 masculine singularוַיְעַקֵּר 2 Samuel 8:4 = 1 Chronicles 18:4,2masculine singularתְּעַקֵּר Joshua 11:6 all with accusative; Perfect 3 masculine plural עִקְּרוּ שׁוֺר Genesis 49:6 they hamstrung an ox.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָקַר

(1)  to root out, to pluck up (a plant), Ecclesiastes 3:2. (Syr. and Ch. id. The primary syllable is קר; compare the kindred roots קוּר, נָקַר; also כּוּר, כָּרָה, אָכַר.) Hence

(2) i.q. Arab. عَقُرَ to be barren, prop. to have the testicles extirpated; compare the remarks on סָרַס.

Niphal, to be overthrown (as a city), Zephaniah 2:4.

Piel, to hamstring or hough a horse, by which the animal is rendered useless and unfit for work, Joshua 11:6, Joshua 11:9; 2 Samuel 8:4; 1 Chronicles 18:4 a bull, Genesis 49:6. LXX. νευροκοπεῖν. It was anciently the practice of victors (and still is the case), thus to treat the horses taken in battle, when they cannot carry them away with them; Germ. dem Pferde die Heffen abhauen. (Arab. عَقَرَ id.)
