1 collective thorns, thorn-bushes, token of waste-land, only Isaiah , + שַׁיִת Isaiah 5:6; Isaiah 7:23,24,25; Isaiah 27:4; figurative Isaiah 9:17; Isaiah 10:17; ׳קוֺץ שׁ Isaiah 32:13.

2 adamant, as sharp, כְּתוּבָה ֗֗֗ בְּצִמֹּרֶן׳שׁ Jeremiah 17:1 ("" בְּעֵט בַּדְוֶל); as hard, figurative of prophet's firmness Ezekiel 3:9; Zechariah 7:12 figurative of hard heart.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁמִיר m.

(1)  a sharp point (see שָׁמַר No. II.), hence thorn, collect. thorns, Isaiah 5:6, 7:23, 24, 25 9:17 32:13 metaph. used of enemies, Isaiah 10:17, 27:4 (Arab. سَمُرَ ةُ coll. سَمُرُ is the Egyptian thorn, a thorn-tree).

(2) diamond, so called from its cutting and perforating (as the point of a stylus was made of diamonds Jeremiah 17:1), Ezekiel 3:9; Zechariah 7:12. (Arab. سَامُورُ id. We may, perhaps, compare Gr. σμῖρις, σμῦρις, i.e. diamond dust, which was used in polishing. Bohlen considers the word to be of Indian origin, comparing asmîra, a stone which eats away, used of gems, iron.)

(3) [Shamir] pr.n.

(a) of a town in the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:48.

(b) of a town in mount Ephraim, Judges 10:1, Judges 10:2.
