Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָמַל fut. יַחְמֹל inf. חֻמְלָה Ezekiel 16:5, to be mild, gentle. (Arab. with the letters transposed حَلُمَ to be gentle, longsuffering, حِلْمُ μακροθυμία, حَلِيمُ gentle. The primary idea is that of softness, and this signification is preserved in the Greek, ἁμαλός, ἀμαλός, ἁπαλός.) Hence

(1) to pity, to have compassion on, followed by עַל of pers. Exodus 2:6; 1 Samuel 23:21.

(2) to spare, followed by עַל 1 Samuel 15:3, 15 1 Samuel 15:15; 2 Samuel 21:7; 2 Chronicles 36:15, 17 2 Chronicles 36:17 followed by אֶל Isaiah 9:18 also, to be sparing of any thing, to use sparingly, followed by אֶל Jeremiah 50:14 לְ with inf. 2 Samuel 12:4 עַל Job 20:13; Ezekiel 36:21, “I will be sparing of my holy name,” I will care for its honour.
