I Att. ἐλασς-ττόω: aor. ἠλάττωσα Lys. 13.9, Plb. 16.21.5: pf. ἠλλάττωκα D.H. Comp. 6, etc.: Pass., fut. -ωθήσομαι Th. 5.34, D. 21.66: fut. Med. in same sense, Hdt. 6.11, Th. 5.104: aor. ἠλασσώθην, -ττώθην, Id. 1.77, D. 10.33: pf. ἠλάττωμαι Apollod.Com. 7.3, Plb. 18.4.3:

1. make less or smaller, diminish, reduce in amount, PTeb. 19.11 (ii B.C.), PLips. 105.28 (i A.D.): Pass., POxy. 918xi3 (ii A.D.).

2. in early writers, lower, degrade, τὴν πόλιν Lys. 13.9, Isoc. 8.17; ἠλάττωσας αὐτὸν βραχύ τι παρ' ἀγγέλους LXX Psalms 8:6; cut down, shorten, συναλοιφαῖς τὰ ῥήματα D.H. Comp. 6: c. gen., detract from, μὴ προστιθέναι τιμήν, ἀλλὰ μὴ ἐλασσοῦν τῆς ὑπαρχούσης Th. 3.42: Med., reduce the power of, τινάς Plb. 22.15.1.

ἐλαττόω (Buttmann, 7), ἐλάττω: 1 aorist ἠλαττωσα; passive, (present ἐλαττοῦμαι); perfect participle ἠλαττωμενος; (ἐλαττῶν); to make less or inferior: τινα, in dignity, Hebrews 2:7; passive to be made less or inferior: in dignity, Hebrews 2:9; to decrease (opposed to αὐξάνω), in authority and popularity, John 3:30. (Many times in the Sept.; in Greek writings from Thucydides on.)

II. 382.13 (B.C. 30–A.D. 1) ἐμ μηδενὶ ἐλαττουμένου τοῦ Ἀκυσιλάου ἐν ᾗ ἔχει μ ̣[ο ]υ μίσθωσιν, ";Acusilaus shall incur no loss in the lease which he holds of me"; (Edd.), P Lond 897.1 (A.D.84) (= III. p. 206) λαογραφίας τότε γὰρ ἐλασσωθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ προόντος κωμογραμμάτεως, and P Hamb I. 8.12 (A.D. 136) μὴ ἐλαττουμένων ἡμῶν ὑπὲρ ὧν ὀφι ̣εται λοιπῶν φόρων τοῦ αὐτοῦ ιθ ̄ (ἔτους), ";ohne dass wir beeinträchtigt werden in Bezug auf die übrigen Abgaben desselben Jahres, die Ihr uns noch schuldet"; (Ed., who refers to Gradenwitz Einführung i. p. 31).
