Πόπλιος, Ποπλίου, , Publius (a Roman name), the name of a chief magistrate ((Greek πρῶτος) but see Dr. Woolsey's addition to the article 'Publius' in B. D. (American edition)) of the island of Melita; nothing more is known of him: Acts 28:7, 8.

I. 81.16 (A.D. 197) σὺ φρόντισον σὺν τῷ βασιλ (ικῷ) γρα (μματεῖ) τὰς τάξεις προκηρῦξαι, and P Lond 1919.29 (c. A.D. 330–340) ἐφάνη δὲ ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἐν πᾶσι ἡ προκυρ ̣ι ̣σσομένη (l. προκηρυσσομένη), ";your love which is trumpeted abroad was shown in all things"; (Bell). For the corresponding subst. = ";auction,"; cf. P Oxy IV. 716.20 (A.D. 186) τὴν προκήρυξιν γενέσθαι, ";that a public auction should be held.";
