גָּדַד fut. יָגֹד

(1)  to cut into, to cut; Arab. جَدَّ to prune a vine, to cut cloth from the loom. Compare Ch. גָּדַד. (Kindred roots are גָּדָה, גָּדַע. This signification of cutting, hewing, belongs to the syllable גד in common with the sibilated גז, see גָּזַז, from which it springs, by taking the sibilant away: both of these are softened forms from the harsher syllables קץ, קשׁ, כס, חץ, חז, and (with the sibilant taken away) קט, קד, חט, חד; in all of which there is the power of cutting: see the roots גָּזַז, קָצַץ, חָצַץ, קָדַד, חָדַד. In the Indo-Germanic languages, compare cœdo, scindo, σχίζω for σχίδω, Pers. حيدن to cleave, خودن i.q. Engl. to cut.) From the idea of cutting is

(2) to penetrate, to break in upon, i.q. גּוּד. Psalms 94:21, followed by עַל. Hence גְּדוּד and Hithpoel. From the idea of cutting off, defining, is

(3) the signification of lot and fortune (compare גְּזַר No. 2), whence, Heb. גַּד, גָּד fortune.

Hithpoel

(1) to cut oneself, to make incisions on one’s skin, as in mourning, Jeremiah 16:6, 41:5 47:5 or as afflicting the body for any cause, Deuteronomy 14:1; 1 Kings 18:28.

(2) reflect. of Kal No. 2, fich drängen, zufammendrängen, to crowd in great numbers into one place, Jeremiah 5:7 Mic. 4:14.
