Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָמַד fut. יַעֲמֹד

(1)  to stand. (Arab. عَمَدَ Conj. I. II. IV. transit. to set firmly, to sustain, to prop.) Used of men, Genesis 24:30, 31 Genesis 24:31, 41:17 and of inanimate things, Deuteronomy 31:15; Joshua 3:16, 11:13. Followed by prepositions

(a) followed by לִפְנֵי to stand before a king, i.e. to serve, to minister to him, Genesis 41:46; Deuteronomy 1:38; 1 Kings 1:28, 10:8 Daniel 1:5 (comp. עָמַד בְּהֵיכַל הַמֶּלֶךְ Daniel 1:4); ע׳ לִפְנֵי יְיָ to minister to Jehovah, used of prophets, 1 Kings 17:1, 18:15 Jeremiah 15:19 priests, Deuteronomy 10:8; Judges 20:28 comp. Followed by לִפְנֵי to stand firm before any one, to resist him, Psalms 76:8, 130:3 147:17 Nahum 1:6 more rarely followed by בִּפְנֵי Joshua 21:44, 23:9 נֶנֶד Ecclesiastes 4:12 מִן Daniel 11:8 simply, Daniel 11:15, 25 Daniel 11:25 followed by בְּ to persist, to persevere, in any thing, Isaiah 47:12; Ecclesiastes 8:3; 2 Kings 23:3. Once followed by an acc. Ezekiel 17:14, “to keep the covenant (and) to stand to it (לְעָמְדָהּ).” Hence to remain in the same place, Exodus 9:28 or state, used both of persons and things, Leviticus 13:5, 37 Leviticus 13:37; Jeremiah 32:14, 48:11 Daniel 10:17, 11:6 specially to remain amongst the living, Exodus 21:21.

(3) to stand still, to stop, (ftillftehn), as opp. to go on one’s way, to proceed. 1 Samuel 20:38, “make haste אַל תַּעֲמֹד do not stop.” Used of the sun standing still in his course, Joshua 10:13 of the sea becoming tranquil, Jonah 1:15 compare 2 Kings 4:6. Followed by מִן to desist from any thing, to leave off. Genesis 29:35, וַתַּעֲמֹד מִלֶּדֶת “she ceased from bearing children;” 30:9.

(4) to stand up, arise (aufftehn), i.q. קוּם, but only found in the latter books, Daniel 12:1, 13 Daniel 12:13 often used of a new prince, Daniel 8:23, 11:2, Daniel 11:3, 20 Daniel 11:20; Ecclesiastes 4:15 of war springing up, 1 Chronicles 20:4 followed by עַל to rise up against any one, Daniel 8:25, 11:14 1 Chronicles 21:1 compare Leviticus 19:16.

(5) pass. to be constituted, set, appointed. Ezra 10:14, יַעַמְדוּ־נָא שָׂרֵינוּ “let our rulers be appointed,” let us appoint our rulers, Daniel 11:31.

Hiphil הֶעֶמִיד

(1) causat. of Kal No. 1, to cause to stand, to set, Psalms 31:9; Leviticus 14:11 used figuratively, to constitute, to decree, 2 Chronicles 30:5 followed by לְ to destine (to promise) to any one, 33:8 followed by עַל to impose (a law) on any one, Nehemiah 10:33 also to constitute, to set in an office or function, 1 Kings 12:32; 1 Chronicles 15:16.

(2) Causat. of Kal No. 2, to cause to stand firm, or endure, i.e. to establish, to preserve, 1 Kings 15:4; 2 Chronicles 9:8; Proverbs 29:4 to confirm, i.q. קִיֵּם 2 Chronicles 35:2; Daniel 11:14, “to confirm the vision,” i.e. by the event.

(3) i.q. Kal No. 3, intrans. to stand still, 2 Chronicles 18:34.

(4) to raise, to set up, as statues, 2 Chronicles 33:19 a house, Ezra 2:68, 9:9 also, to arouse, to stir up, Nehemiah 6:7; Daniel 11:11, 13 Daniel 11:13.

Hophal, to be set, placed, Leviticus 16:10 to remain, 1 Kings 22:35.

Derived nouns, עֹמֶד, עֶמְדָה, עַמּוּד, מַעֲמָד, מָעֲמָד.

II. עָמַד ἅπ. λεγόμ. of uncertain authority; Ezekiel 29:7, וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ לָהֶם כָּל־מָתְנַיִם which clearly stands for וְהִמְעַדְתָּ וגו׳ “and thou hast made all their loins to shake;” compare Psalms 69:24. But it appears to me uncertain whether the letters are transposed by a certain usage of the language, or whether through some error in this place only. This form however seems to be one of those which are reckoned among the innumerable licenses, or barbarisms [rather peculiarities of dialect] of the prophet Ezekiel.
