"For yet a little while,And He [fn] who is coming will come and will not tarry.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; Genesis 5:24">[fn] for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.

But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in [fn] Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.

And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets:

God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Proverbs 3:11,12">[xr] For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

For whom the Lord loves He chastens,And scourges every son whom He receives." Proverbs 3:11, 12 ">[fn]

If [fn] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?

For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.

Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
