for as long as that righteous man lived among them, day after day he was being tortured in his righteous soul by what he saw and heard in their lawless actionsPsalm 119:139,158; Ezekiel 9:4;">[xr] -

then the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials and to hold unrighteous people for punishment on the day of judgment,Psalm 34:17,19; 1 Corinthians 10:13;">[xr]

suffering wrong as punishment for their wrongdoing. They take pleasure in wild parties in broad daylight. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceitful pleasuresin their love feasts">[fn] while they eat with you.Romans 13:13; 1 Corinthians 11:20-21; Philippians 3:19; Jude 1:12;">[xr]

They have left the straight path and wandered off to follow the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor,Beor">[fn] who loved the reward he got for doing wrong.Numbers 22:5,7, 21,23, 28; Jude 1:11;">[xr]

But he was rebuked for his offense. A donkey that normally cannot talk spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet's insanity.

These men are dried-up springs, mere clouds driven by a storm. Gloomy darkness is reserved for them.Jude 1:12-13;">[xr]

Promising them freedom, they themselves are slaves to depravity, for a person is a slave to whatever conquers him.John 8:34; Romans 6:16; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16;">[xr]

For if, after escaping the world's corruptions through a full knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and conquered by them, then their last condition is worse than their former one.Matthew 12:45; Luke 11:26; Hebrews 6:4; 10:26-27; 2 Peter 1:2,4, 18;">[xr]

It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to know it and turn their backs on the holy commandment that was committed to them.Luke 12:47-48; John 9:41; 15:22;">[xr]

Now by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire and are being kept for the day when ungodly people will be judged and destroyed.Matthew 25:41; 2 Thessalonians 1:8; 2 Peter 3:10;">[xr]

It is he who is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world's.John 1:29; 4:42; 11:51-52; Romans 3:25; 2 Corinthians 5:18; 1 John 1:7;">[xr]

On the other hand, I am writing to you a new commandment that is true in him and in you. For the darkness is fading away, and the true light is already shining.John 1:9; 8:12; 12:35; 13:34; 15:12; Romans 13:12; Ephesians 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:5,8;">[xr]

The person who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no reason for him to stumble.2 Peter 1:10; 1 John 3:14;">[xr]

For everything that is in the world - the desire for fleshly gratification,for the flesh">[fn] the desire for possessions,of the eyes">[fn] and worldly arrogance - is not from the Father but is from the world.Ecclesiastes 5:11;">[xr]

They left us, but they were not part of us, for if they had been part of us, they would have stayed with us. They simply made it clear that none of them was really part of us.Deuteronomy 13:13; Psalm 41:9; Matthew 24:24; John 6:37; 10:28-29; Acts 20:30; 1 Corinthians 11:19; 2 Timothy 2:19;">[xr]

See what kind of love the Father has given us in letting us be called God's children! Yet that is what we are.Yet that is what we are.">[fn] For this reason the world does not recognize us, because it did not recognize him either.John 1:12; 15:18-19; 16:3; 17:25;">[xr]

This is how we have come to know love: Christhe">[fn] gave his life for us. We, too, ought to give our lives for our brothers.John 3:16; 15:13; Romans 5:8; Ephesians 5:2,25; Ephesians 5:2,25, 1 John 4:9,11;">[xr]

This is love: not that we have lovedwe loved">[fn] God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.John 15:16; Romans 5:8,10; Titus 3:4; 1 John 2:2;">[xr]

We have seen for ourselves and can testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.John 1:14; 3:17; 1 John 1:1-2;">[xr]
