ἄτερ, preposition, frequent in the poets (from Homer down), rare in prose writings from Plato (?) down; without, apart from: with the genitive (Dionysius Halicarnassus 3, 10; Plutarch, Numbers 14, Cat. min. 5); in the Bible only in 2 Macc. 12:15; Luke 22:6 (ἄτερ ὄχλου in the absence of the multitude; hence, without tumult), Luke 22:35. For this (originally) poetic word which is found in the Grk Bible only 2 Maccabees 12:15, Luke 22:6 and Luke 22:35, cf. Priene 109.104 (c. B.C. 120) ἄτερ ὀψωνίον , ";without salary."; It occurs in P Oxy VI. 936.18 (iii/A.D., a rather uneducated letter) ὁ ἠπητὴς λέγει ὅτι οὐ δίδω οὔτε τὸν χαλκὸν οὔτε τὸ φαινόλιν ἄτερ Ἰούστου , ";the cobbler says that he will not give up either the money or the cloak without Justus"; (Edd.). Cf. also P Leid Wii. 12 (Apocrypha Moïsis) ἄτερ γὰρ τούτων (the ω corrected from ο ) ὁ εὸς (l. θεὸς ) οὐκ ἐπακούσεται . To the references in the Lexicons may be added Vettius Valens pp. 136.9, 271.9, 341.3, and Cleanthes hymn. Orph. 68, 8.
