Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בּוּס fut. יָבוּס to tread with the feet, to trample on, as a thing neglected and despised, Proverbs 27:7 also to trample to pieces, as enemies, i.e. thoroughly to subject, Isaiah 14:25, 63:6 Psalms 44:6, 60:14. Part. בּוֹסִים Zechariah 10:5. (To tread with the feet is expressed in many languages by the syllable pat variously inflected; see Sanscr. pati, a way, pad, pada, foot [“path, to go”], Zend. pethô, pâte, a path, (Pers. يا foot), Gr. πάτος, πατέω, ποῦς for ποδς, gen. ποδός, Lat. pes, pedis and petere, lower Germ. padden, pedden = πατεῖν, Pfad, Engl. path, Fub (foot), t being changed by the Hebrews into a sibilant pas, bas. Kindred, in the sense of stamping in, is אָבַס, of despising, as the Gr. πατέω, Il. iv. 157; בּוּז, בָּזָה. Compare also דָּבַב, טָפַף.)

Pilel בּוֹסֵס to tread with the feet a holy place or land, Jeremiah 12:10; Isaiah 63:18, with the added signification of polluting and profaning, compare καταπατεῖν i.q. βεβηλοῦν, 1Mac. 3:45, 51 Revelation 11:2 and רָמַס.

Hophal, part. מוּבָס trodden under foot (used of a corpse), Isaiah 14:19.

Hithpalel הִתְבֹּוסֵס to be thrown out to be trampled on, Ezekiel 16:6, 22 Ezekiel 16:22. Compare הִתְרַפֵּס.

Derived nouns are, מְבוּסָה, תְּבוּסָה and pr.n. יְבוּס.
