αἰγιᾰλός, ὁ, sea-shore, beach, Il. 4.422, Od. 22.385, Hdt. 7.50, al., Th. 1.7 (pl.), X. An. 6.4.4, Thphr. HP 7.13.8 (pl.), etc.; distinguished from ἀκτή, Arist. HA 547a10; also in E. (lyr.), IT 425, IA 210; αἰγιαλὸν ἔνδον τρέφει a whole beach of voting-pelbles, Ar. V. 110: prov., αἰγιαλῷ λαλεῖς, of deaf persons, Suid., Zen. 1.38. (Prob. connected with αἰγίς II, αἴξ IV.)
αἰγιαλός, (οῦ, ὁ, the shore of the sea, beach, (from Homer down): Matthew 13:2, 48; John 21:4; Acts 21:5; Acts 27:39, 40. (Many derive the word from ἄγνυμι and ἅλς, as though equivalent to ἀκτή, the place where the sea breaks; others from αἶγες billows and ἅλς (Curtius, § 140; Vanicek, p. 83); others from ἀΐσσω and ἅλς (Schenkl, Liddell and Scott, under the word), the place where the sea rushes forth, bounds forward).

The word is common (MGr = ";seashore";); but it may be noted that in P Tebt I. 79 (c. B.C. 148) it refers to the shore of Lake Moeris; in ib. 82 (B.C. 115) and 83 (late ii/B.C.) to the shore of a marshy lake then covering the neighbourhood of Medinet Nehâs (see the editors’ note on p. 346). So P Fay 82.3 (A.D. 145), P Tebt II. 308.5 (A.D. 174). On the use of the term in Acts 27:39, see W. M. Ramsay St Paul, p. 341, and Expositor V. vi. p. 154 ff. P Fay 222 (iii/A.D.) is the beginning of a document addressed Φιλίππῳ αἰγιαλοφύλακι Ἀρσινοί [του ]. We find γῆ αἰγιαλῖτις mentioned in P Oxy VI. 918xiii. 10 (ii/A.D.), P Lond 924.7 (A.D. 187–8) ( = III. p. 134) : Sir F. G. Kenyon renders ";land on the border of the lake.";
