II = λιβανωτός, frankincense, in which sense it is fem. in Pi. Fr. 122.3, E. Ba. 144 (lyr.); but masc. in PCair.Zen. 69.13 (iii B.C.), AP 6.231 (Phil.), 9.93 (Antip. Thess.), Edict.Diocl. (Ἀθηνᾶ 18.6, Tegea); indeterminate in Sapph. Supp. 20c. 2, S. Fr. 1064, Anaxandr. 41.37, SIG 247ii 19 (Delph., iv B.C.).

λίβανος, λιβάνου, (more rarely (cf. Lob., as below));

1. the frankincense-tree (Pindar, Herodotus, Sophocles, Euripides, Theophrastus, others).

2. frankincense (Hebrew לְבֹנָה; Leviticus 2:1f, 16; Isaiah 60:6, etc.): Matthew 2:11; Revelation 18:13; (Sophocles, Theophrastus, others). Cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 187; (Vanicek, Fremdwörter, under the word. On frankincense see especially Birdwood in the Bible Educator, i., 328ff, 374ff.)

In a list of articles for a sacrifice, P Oxy IX. 1211.11 (ii/A.D.), are included ἔλεον, μέλι, γάλα, πᾶν ἄρωμα χωρὶς λιβάνου, ";oil, honey, milk, every spice except frankincense"; : cf. P Leid Wix. 11 (ii/iii A.D.) κασία, λίβανος, ζμύρνα, the illiterate P Ryl II. 242.4 ff. (iii/A.D.) ἠὰν ᾖς ἀδυνα ̣ατες πέμψε μοι ἀκάνθινε ̣ν ̣ χυλέν, πέμψεν μοι λάβανο ̣ν ̣, ";if you are unable to send me acacia-juice, please send me incense"; (Edd.), and the Pergamum inscr. Cagnat IV. 353b..18 πόπανον (a round sacrificial cake) καὶ λίβανον καὶ λύχνους τῶι Σεβαστῶι. The adj. λιβάνινος occurs in P Oxy I. 114.5 (ii/iii A.D.) δερματικομαφόρτιν λιβάνινον, ";a casket (?) of incense-wood"; (Edd.), and λιβανωτικός in OGIS 132.10 (B.C. 130) τὰ λιβανωτικὰ φορτία. The word is of Semitic origin. MGr λιβάνι, ";incense.";
