John 17:22. (Compare: ἀναθεωρέω, παραθεωρέω.) [SYNONYMS: θεωρεῖν, θέασθαι, ὁρᾶν, σκοπεῖν: θεωρεῖν is used primarily not of an indifferent spectator, but of one who looks at a thing with interest and for a purpose; θεωρεῖν would be used of a general officially reviewing or inspecting an army, θέασθαι of a lay spectator looking at the parade. θεωρεῖν as denoting the careful observation of details can even be contrasted with ὁρᾶν in so far as the latter denotes only perception in the general; so used θεωρεῖν quite coincides with σκοπεῖν Schmidt 1:11; see also Green, 'Critical Note' on Matthew 7:3. Cf. under the words, ὁράω, σκοπέω.]

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

A tendency to use θεωρέω more lightly might be deduced from such passages as P Tebt I. 58.25 (B.C. III) οὗτος οὖν θεωρήσας με ὡς προσεδρεύοντα καθ᾽ ήμέραν ὡσεὶ δεδίλανται, ";seeing me in daily attendance he has as it were turned coward"; (Edd.), though ";watched"; will translate it here; ib. 61(b).33 (B.C. 118–7) ἠξίου [ν ] . . . συνθεωρεῖσθαι, ";conquiri,"; and again .373 θεωρῆσ [θαι (l. τεθεωρῆσ [θαι) ἐκ τῆς ] γε [γεν ]ημένης εἰκασίας μετὰ ταῦτα, ";it was perceived from the subsequent estimate."; But whether the verb belonged to the Volkssprache (Blass N. T. Grammatik.2, p. 59, s.v. ὁρᾶν) or not, it was hardly a synonym of ὁράω : cf. the use of the two verbs in John 16:16 (Abbott Joh. Voc., p. 104 ff.). See P Oxy I. 33 versoiii. 9 (ii/A.D.) θεωρήσατε ἕνα ἀπ᾽ αἰῶνος ἀπαιγόμ [ενο ]ν, ";behold one led off to death"; (lit. ";from life";), P Giss I. 9.10 (ii/A.D.) ὡς δὲ οὐτὲ ἴχνος ἐθεώρο [υν, of a woman searching for her husband, and the Christian P Heid 6.9 (iv/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 126) ἐγῖθεν (l. ἐκεῖθεν) θεωροῦμέν σε τὸν δεσπότην καὶ κενὸν (l. καινὸν) (π) [τ ]ρω [να, ";wherefore we regard you as master and new patron."; Similarly from the inscrr. OGIS 751.9 (ii/B.C.) Boisacq (p. 343) derives the word from θέα and ὁράω. MGr θωρῶ = θεωρῶ (see Thumb Hellen., p. 17).
