Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֲשִׁישָׁה f. 2 Samuel 6:19; 1 Chronicles 16:3. Pl. אֲשִׁישִׁים Hosea 3:1 & אֲשִׁישׁוֹת, Song of Solomon 2:5 liba, cakes, specially such as were made of grapes, and dried and pressed into a certain form; see אֲשִׁשֵׁי עֲנָבִים Hos. loc. cit., from the root אָשַׁשׁ. They are mentioned as dainties, with which those who were wearied with a journey and languid were refreshed (2 Sa., Chron., Cant. l. l. c. c.), and which were offered in sacrifices to idols (Hos. loc. cit.). This word differs from צִמּוּק i.e. dried grapes, but not pressed together into a cake, and from דְּבֵלָה i.e. figs pressed together into a cake. The primary idea should be sought apparently in that of pressing together (see the root, and comp. כַּוָּן cakes, from כַּוֵּן to make firm, and צַפִּיחִית from צָפַח to spread out), and not in the idea of fire (אֵשׁ), as being cakes baked with fire. The same word is found in Pseudojon. Exodus 16:31, where אֲשִׁשְׁיָן is for the Hebr. צַפִּיחִית, and in the Mishnah (Nedarim, vi. § 10), where אֲשִׁישִׁים is used for food made of lentiles, no doubt cakes made of boiled lentiles.
