And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people and their scribes, saying,

And the taskmasters of the people and their scribes went out and said to the people, Thus says Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

And the scribes of the children of Israel, whom Pharaohs taskmasters had appointed over them, were beaten, and demanded, Why have you not completed your quota of bricks both yesterday and today, as heretofore?

Then the scribes of the children of Israel came and complained to Pharaoh, saying, Why are your servants treated in this manner?

And the scribes of the children of Israel saw that they were in a bad situation, for it was said to them, You must not reduce the number of your bricks, of your daily task.

And the LORD said to Moses, Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be chiefs of the people and its scribes; and bring them to the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may be ready there with you.

So I took the chiefs of your tribes, wise men and renowned, and made them chieftains over you, commanders over thousands and captains over hundreds and officers over fifty and officers over ten and scribes for your tribes.

You shall appoint to yourselves judges and scribes in all your cities, which the LORD your God gives you, throughout your tribes; and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

Then the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return and go to his house, lest his brethrens heart faint as well as his heart.

And when the scribes have made an end of speaking to the people, the commanders of the army shall stand at the head of the people.

You stand this day before the LORD your God, all the heads of your tribes, your elders and your scribes, all the men of Israel,

Gather to me all the elders of your tribes and your scribes, that I may speak these words to you, and call heaven and earth to witness against you.

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people and their scribes, saying,

And all Israel and their elders and their scribes and their judges stood on this side of the ark, and on that side the priests and the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, the natives as well as the sojourners; half of them toward mount Gerizim, and half of them toward mount Gebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded, that they should bless the people of Israel as before.
