the surname of a family which was one of the most distinguished of the 17th century for theological learning. The first eminent man of the nature was Benedikt Carpzov, professor of law at Wittenberg, who died in 1624; and the latest, Johann Benedikt (the fourth), died as professor at Helmstadt in 1803.
