II not offensive, ὀσμαί Aret. CA 2.3; of persons, not burdensome, ἀ. ἑαυτὸν τηρεῖν, παρέχειν, 2 Corinthians 11:9, CIG 5361.15 (Berenice). Adv. -ρῶς without giving offence, Simp. in Epict. p.85D.; without taking offence, ib. p.88D.

ἀβαρής, (ές (βάρος weight), without weight, light; tropically, not burdensome: ἀβαρῆ ὑμῖν, ἐμαυτόν ἐτήρησα I have avoided burdening you with expense on my account, 2 Corinthians 11:9; see 1 Thessalonians 2:9, cf. 6. (From Aristotle down.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For ἀβαρής in a metaphorical sense, as in 2 Corinthians 11:9, Nägeli (p. 38) cites CIG 5361.15 (Berenice, i/B.C.) . ἑαυτὸν παρέσχηται, and BGU I. 248.26 (ii/A.D.) ἐὰν δέ σοι ἀβα [ρὲ ]ς ᾖ, χρῆσόν μοι ὀνάριον. Add P Oxy VI. 933.29 (late ii/A.D.) and BGU IV. 1080.17 f. (iii/A.D. ?) εἴ σοι ἀβ [α ]ρές ἐστιν καὶ δυνα [τόν, σ ]υναπόστιλόν μοι κτλ. The physical sense is cited from Aristotle; the metaphysical appears in Plutarch (59C).
