פּוּר i.q. פָּרַר to break. Hence

Hiphil הֵפִיר twice (Psalms 33:10; Ezekiel 17:19) i.q. הֵפֵר, and the derived noun פּוּרָה a wine-press.

II.

פּוּר i.q. Arab. فَارَ to be hot, to bubble up in boiling (comp. פָּאַר), whence פָּרוּר (for פָּארוּר) a pot. [This root is not given in Thes.]

פּוּר m. a lot, a Persic word, which in Esther 3:7 is explained גּוֹרָלּ. (It answers to the Persic باره pâreh, i.e. a part, a portion, whence باره كردن to divide, and بهره behreh, part, lot. It is of the same stock as the Lat. pars; comp. also the Hebr. פּוּר and פָּרַר.) Pl. פּוּרִים lots, Esther 9:24, יְמֵי הַפּוּרִים verse 31, and nakedly פּוּרִים ibid. 29, 32, “the feast of Purim,” or of lots, which the Jews celebrate on the 14th and 15th of the month Adar, in commemoration of the events narrated in the book of Esther.
