Proverbs 7:26 Verse Proverbs 7:26. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. — That is, such like women have been the ruin of many. חללים chalalim, which we render wounded, also signifies soldiers or men of war; and עצמים atsumim, which we render strong men, may be translated heroes. Many of those who have distinguished themselves in the field and in the cabinet have been overcome and destroyed by their mistresses. History is full of such examples.
Ecclesiastes 5:6 Verse Ecclesiastes 5:6. Neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error — Nor think of saying "before the cruel angel, who shall exercise authority over thee in the judgment of the great day, that thou didst it through ignorance." - Chaldee. I believe by the angel nothing else is intended than the priest, whose business it was to take cognizance of vows and offerings. See Leviticus 5:4-5. In Malachi 2:7, the priest is called the "angel of the Lord of hosts."
Ecclesiastes 7:12 Verse Ecclesiastes 7:12. Wisdom is a defence — To whom Solomon answers: All true wisdom is most undoubtedly a great advantage to men in all circumstances; and money is also of great use: but it cannot be compared to wisdom. Knowledge of Divine and human things is a great blessing. Money is the means of supporting our animal life: but wisdom - the religion of the true God - gives life to them that have it. Money cannot procure the favour of God, nor give life to the soul.
Song of Solomon 7:13 Verse Song of Solomon 7:13. The mandrakes give a smell — Genesis 30:14, where the mandrake is particularly described; from which this passage will receive considerable light. The reader is requested to consult it.All manner of pleasant fruits — Fruits new and old;
Isaiah 37:36 Verse Isaiah 37:36. Then the angel — Before "the angel," the other copy, 2 Kings 19:35, adds "it came to pass the same night, that"...The Prophet Hosea, Hosea 1:7, has given a plain prediction of the miraculous deliverance of the kingdom of Judah: - "And to the house of Judah I will be tenderly merciful: And I will save them by JEHOVAH their God. And I will not save them by the bow; Nor by sword, nor by battle; By horses, nor by horsemen." - L.
Jeremiah 10:7 Verse Jeremiah 10:7. Who would not fear thee — Who would not worship thee as the Author and Giver of all good? The fear of God is often taken for the whole of true religion.Among all the wise men of the nation — Not even the wisest and most cultivated of the nations have ever found out any one equal to thee; but so exalted and holy art thou, that in all their wisdom and research they have never been able to find out the true God.
Ezekiel 7:12 Verse Ezekiel 7:12. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn — Such is now the state of public affairs, that he who through want has been obliged to sell his inheritance, need not mourn on the account; as of this the enemy would soon have deprived him. And he who has bought it need not rejoice in his bargain, as he shall soon be stripped of his purchase, and either fall by the sword, or be glad to flee for his life.
Daniel 7:11 Verse Daniel 7:11. I beheld then because of the voice (or, the beast will be destroyed because) of the great words which the horn spake - his body destroyed — When the dominion was taken from the rest of the beasts, their bodies were not destroyed, but suffered
Amos 1:4 Verse Amos 1:4. Ben-hadad. — He was son and successor of Hazael. See the cruelties which they exercised upon the Israelites, 2 Kings 10:32; 2 Kings 13:7, c., and see especially 2 Kings 8:12, where these cruelties are predicted. The fire threatened here is the war so successfully carried on against the Syrians by Jeroboam II., in which he took Damascus and Hamath, and reconquered all the ancient possessions of Israel. See 2 Kings 14:25-26; 2 Kings 14:28.
Matthew 7:22 Verse Matthew 7:22. Many will say to me in that day — εκεινη τη ημερα, in that very day, viz. the day of judgment - have we not prophesied, taught, publicly preached, in thy name; acknowledging thee to be the only Saviour, and proclaiming thee as such to others; cast out demons, impure spirits, who had taken possession of the bodies of men; done many miracles, being assisted by supernatural agency to invert even the course of nature, and thus prove the truth of the doctrine we preached?
Acts 7:14 Verse Acts 7:14. Threescore and fifteen souls. — There are several difficulties here, which it is hoped the reader will find satisfactorily removed in the note on Genesis 46:20. It is well known that in Genesis 46:27, and in Deuteronomy 10:22, their number is said to be threescore and ten; but Stephen quotes from the Septuagint, which adds five persons to the account which are not in the Hebrew text, Machir, Gilead, Sutelaam, Taham, and Edem; but see the note referred to above.
Galatians 6:7 Verse 7. Be not deceived — Neither deceive yourselves, nor permit yourselves to be deceived by others. He seems to refer to the Judaizing teachers.God is not mocked — Ye cannot deceive him, and he will not permit you to mock him with pretended instead
Philippians 3:7 Verse 7. But what things were gain — The credit and respect which I had, as being zealously attached to the law, and to the traditions of the elders, I counted loss for Christ - I saw that this could stand me in no stead; that all my acts of righteousness were nothing on which I could depend for salvation; and that Christ crucified could alone profit me; for I found that it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sin.
Titus 1:7 Verse 7. Not self-willed — μη αυθαδη. Not one who is determined to have his own way in every thing; setting up his own judgment to that of all others; expecting all to pay homage to his understanding. Such a governor in the Church of God can do little good, and may do much mischief. Not soon angry — μη οπγιλον. Not a choleric man; one who is irritable; who is apt to be inflamed on every opposition; one who has not proper command over his own temper.
James 4:7 Verse 7. Submit - to God — Continue to bow to all his decisions, and to all his dispensations.Resist the devil — He cannot conquer you if you continue to resist. Strong as he is, God never permits him to conquer the man who continues to resist him; he cannot force the human will. He who, in the terrible name of JESUS, opposes even the devil himself, is sure to have a speedy and glorious conquest. He flees from that name, and from his conquering blood.
1 John 5:18 Verse 18. Whosoever is born of God sinneth not — This is spoken of adult Christians; they are cleansed from all unrighteousness, consequently from all sin, 1 John 1:7-9.Keepeth himself — That is, in the love of God, Jude 1:21, by building up himself on his most holy faith, and praying in the Holy Ghost; and that wicked one-the devil, toucheth him not-finds nothing of his own nature in him on which he can work, Christ dwelling in his heart by faith.
