Exodus 25:17 — Verse Exodus 25:17. A mercy-seat — כפרת capporeth, from כפר caphar, to cover or overspread; because by an act of pardon sins are represented as being covered, so that they no longer appear in the eye of Divine justice to displease, irritate, and call for punishment;
Exodus 3:8 — the very purpose for which I am now come down upon this mountain, and for which I manifest myself to thee.Large - land — Canaan, when compared with the small tract of Goshen, in which they were now situated, and where, we learn, from Exodus 1:7, they were straitened for room, might be well called a large land. See a fine description of this land Deuteronomy 8:7.A land flowing with milk and honey — Excellent for pasturage, because abounding in the most wholesome herbage and flowers; and
1 Kings 18:38 — their god, is little more than a poetic account of the above transactions. Olymp. Od. 7, ver. 86. The Rhodians, mindful of their sire's behest, Straight in the citadel an altar reared; But with imperfect rites the Power addressed, And without fire their sacrifice prepared; Yet Jove, approving, o'er the assembly spread A yellow cloud,
Psalms 114:8 — Psalms 114:4. Hawes gladed als wethers, And hilles als lambes of schepe. Psalms 114:5. What is to the se, that thou fled? And thou Jordane that thou ert turned agayne? Psalms 114:6. Hawes gladded als wethers? And hils als lambs of schepe. Psalms 114:7. Fra the face of Lorde styrde is the erth, Fra the face of God of Jabob; Psalms 114:8. That turnes the stane in stank of waters, And roche in wels of waters. And, as a still more ancient specimen of our language, I shall insert the Anglo-Saxon, with
זמרו משכיל zammeru maskil, cantad una canción instructiva .
Ahora he aquí el castigo : -
Isaiah 2:6 — yaspichu, "and have joined themselves to the children of strangers;" that is, in marriage or worship. - Dr. JUBB. So Vulg., adhaeserunt. Compare Isaiah 14:1. But the very learned professor Chevalier Michaelis has explained the word יספחו yesupachu, Job 30:7, (German translation, note on the place,) in another manner; which perfectly well agrees with that place, and perhaps will be found to give as good a sense here. ספיח saphiach, the noun, means corn springing up, not from the seed regularly sown on cultivated
Numbers 25:12 — nine more from that time to the captivity, (see 1 Chronicles 6:4; 1 Chronicles 6:15), and fifteen from their return to the time of Antiochus Eupator, the last of whom was Onias, slain by Lysias. Ezra, the great priest and scribe, was of this line, Ezra 7:1; Ezra 7:5. The family of Ithamar, uncle of Phinehas, had the priesthood for about 150 years; but it was restored to the family of Phinehas in the person of Zadok the priest, 1 Chronicles 6:50, in which it continued in the whole about 950 years. Probably
Matthew 21:13 — Verse Matthew 21:13. My house shall be called the house of prayer — This is taken from Isaiah 56:7.But ye have made it a den of thieves. — This is taken from Jeremiah 7:11.Our Lord alludes here to those dens and caves in Judea, in which the public robbers either hid or kept themselves fortified. They who are placed in the Church of Christ to
John 11:48 — were so incontestable that they could no longer cry out, He is a deceiver. Both our place and nation. — Literally, this place, τον τοπον: but that the temple only is understood is dear from Acts 6:13-14; Acts 2:0 Macc. 1:14; 2:18; 3:18; 5:16, 17; 10:7; where it is uniformly called the place, or the holy place, because they considered it the most glorious and excellent place in the world. When men act in opposition to God's counsel, the very evils which they expect thereby to avoid will come
John 21:14 — the tomb. Matthew 28:9.3dly, To the two disciples who went to Emmaus, Luke 24:13, c.4thly, To St. Peter alone, Luke 24:34.5thly, To the ten, in the absence of Thomas, John 20:19.6thly, Eight days after to the eleven, Thomas being present John 20:26.7thly, To the seven, mentioned in John 21:2; which was between the eighth and fortieth day after his resurrection. Besides these seven appearances, he showed himself,8thly, To the disciples on a certain mountain in Galilee, Matthew 28:16.If the appearance
Acts 1:3 — Galilee according to his own appointment.4. His subjecting his body to be touched and handled by them.5. His instructing them in the nature and doctrines of his kingdom.6. His appearing to upwards of five hundred persons at once, 1 Corinthians 15:6. And,7. Continuing these public manifestations of himself for forty days. The several appearances of Jesus Christ, during the forty days of his sojourning with his disciples, between his resurrection and ascension, are thus enumerated by Bishop Pearce: The
Romans 11:27 — Verse 27. For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. — The reader on referring to Isaiah 59:20, Isaiah 59:21, will find that the words of the original are here greatly abridged. They are the following: -And the Redeemer shall
Romans 7:8 — Verse Romans 7:8. Sin, taking occasion by the commandment — I think the pointing, both in this and in the 11th verse, to be wrong: the comma should be after occasion, and not after commandment. But sin taking occasion, wrought in me by this commandment all manner
1 Timothy 6:20 — Verse 20. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust — This is another repetition of the apostolic charge. (See 1 Timothy 1:5; 1 Timothy 1:18-19; 1 Timothy 4:6-7; 1 Timothy 4:14-16; 1 Timothy 5:21; 1 Timothy 6:13.) Carefully preserve that doctrine which I have delivered to thee. Nothing can be more solemn and affectionate than this charge.Avoiding profane and vain babblings — See note on 1 Timothy 1:4,
