Zechariah 9:15 Verse Zechariah 9:15. The Lord of hosts shall defend them — He alone is the sure trust of his Church.Subdue with sling-stones — This was an ancient and powerful instrument in the hands of the Hebrews. Judges 20:16.They shall drink — After the victory
Malachi 1:3 Verse Malachi 1:3. And I hated Esau — I have shown him less love; Genesis 29:30-31. I comparatively hated him by giving him an inferior lot. And now, I have not only laid waste the dwelling-place of the Edomites, by the incursions of their enemies; but (Malachi 1:4) they shall remain the perpetual monuments of my vengeance.
Matthew 16:9 Verse 9. - 10. Do ye not yet understand - the five loaves - neither the seven — Matthew 14:14, c. How astonishing is it that these men should have any fear of lacking bread, after having seen the two miracles which our blessed Lord alludes to above! Though
Matthew 17:7 likely that this transfiguration took place in the night, which was a more proper season to show forth its glory than the day time, in which a part of the splendour must necessarily be lost by the presence of the solar light. Besides, St. Luke, Luke 9:37, expressly says, that it was on the next day after the transfiguration that our Lord came down from the mount.
Matthew 26:45 from the Jews. Here it probably means the Roman cohort that was stationed on festivals for the defence of the temple. By the Romans he was adjudged to death; for the Jews acknowledged that they had no power in capital cases. See the note on Matthew 9:10.
Mark 9:32 understanding of this important subject; but the other nine might have been ignorant of this matter, who were not present at the transfiguration; probably it is of these that the evangelist speaks here. See the observations on the transfiguration, Matthew 17:9, &c., and Matthew 18:1.
Luke 14:26 Verse Luke 14:26. And hate not — Matthew, Matthew 10:37, expresses the true meaning of this word, when he says, He who loveth his father and mother MORE than me. In Matthew 6:24, he uses the word hate in the same sense. When we read, Romans 9:13, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated, the meaning is simply, I have loved Jacob - the Israelites, more than Esau-the Edomites; and that this is no arbitrary interpretation of the word hate, but one agreeable to the Hebrew idiom, appears from
John 2:13 Luke 6:1. The third, John 6:4. And the fourth, which was that at which he was crucified, John 11:55. From which it appears,1. That our blessed Lord continued his public ministry about three years and a half, according to the prophecy of Daniel, Daniel 9:27. And,2. That, having been baptized about the beginning of his thirtieth year, he was crucified precisely in the middle of his thirty-third. See Martin.
John 20:17 Verse John 20:17. Touch me not — μη μου απτου, Cling not to me. απτομαι has this sense in Job 31:7, where the Septuagint use it for the Hebrew דבק dabak, which signifies to cleave, cling, stick, or be glued to. From Matthew 28:9, it appears that some of the women held him by the feet and worshipped him. This probably Mary did; and our Lord seems to have spoken to her to this effect: "Spend no longer time with me now: I am not going immediately to heaven - you will have several
John 3:9 Verse John 3:9. How can these things be? — Our Lord had very plainly told him how these things could be, and illustrated the new birth by one of the most proper similes that could be chosen; but so intent was this great man an making every thing submit to the
John 9:11 Verse John 9:11. A man that is called Jesus — The whole of this relation is simple and artless in the highest degree. The blind man had never seen Jesus, but he had heard of his name - he felt that he had put something on his eyes, which he afterwards found
Acts 10:3 o'clock in the afternoon, (Acts 3:1; Acts 3:1,) the time of public prayer, according to the custom of the Jews, and while Peter was engaged in that sacred duty. The angelic appearance to Cornelius was something similar to that made to Daniel, Daniel 9:20-23, and that especially to Zachariah, the father of John Baptist, Luke 1:11, &c.
Acts 7:9 Verse Acts 7:9. And the patriarchs — The twelve sons of Jacob, thus called because each was chief or head of his respective family or tribe.Moved with envy — ζηλωσαντες. We translate ζηλος variously: zeal or fervent affection, whether its object be good
Acts 9:24 Verse Acts 9:24. They watched the gates day and night to kill him. — At this time Damascus was under the government of Aretas, king of Arabia, who was now at war with Herod, his son-in-law, who had put away his daughter in order to marry Herodias, his brother
Romans 13:9 Verse Romans 13:9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery — He that loves another will not deprive him of his wife, of his life, of his property, of his good name; and will not even permit a desire to enter into his heart which would lead him to wish to possess
Romans 14:9 Verse Romans 14:9. Christ both died and rose — That we are not our own, but are the Lord's both in life and death, is evident from this-that Christ lived, and died, and rose again, that he might be the Lord of the dead and the living; for his power extends equally
Romans 3:9 Verse Romans 3:9. JEW. What then? — After all, have not we Jews a better claim to the privileges of the kingdom of God than the Gentiles have?APOSTLE. No, in no wise — For I have already proved that both Jews and Gentiles are under the guilt of sin; that
Galatians 3:22 the glory of God; and, being tried and found guilty, συνεκλεισεν ἡ γραφη, the Scripture hath shut them up-put them in prison, and locked them up, till the time should come in which the sentence of the law should be executed upon them: (See Romans 3:9-20, and the notes there; and particularly Romans 11:32, where the apostle uses the same metaphor, and which in the note is particularly explained.)That the promise of justification, by faith of Jesus Christ, might be given to them that believe.
Ephesians 1:9 Verse 9. Having made known unto us the mystery — That the Gentiles should ever be received into the Church of God, and have all the privileges of the Jews, without being obliged to submit to circumcision, and perform the rites and ceremonies of the Jewish
2 Thessalonians 2:9 Verse 9. Whose coming is after the working of Satan — The operation of God's Spirit sends his messengers; the operation of Satan's spirit sends his emissaries. The one comes κατ' ενεργειαν του Θεου, after or according to the energy or inward powerful
