Isaiah 16:4 — Verse Isaiah 16:4. Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab - "Let the outcasts of Moab sojourn with thee, O Zion"] Setting the points aside, this is by much the most obvious construction of the Hebrew, as well as most agreeable to the context, and the design of the prophet.
Isaiah 37:1 — CHAPTER XXXVII Hezekiah is greatly distressed, and sends to Isaiah the prophet to pray for him, 1-4. Isaiah returns a comfortable answer, and predicts the destruction of the king of Assyria and his army, 5-7. Sennacherib, hearing that his kingdom was invaded by the Ethiopians, sends a terrible letter to Hezekiah, to induce him to surrender, 9-13.
Jeremiah 10:16 — Verse Jeremiah 10:16. The Portion of Jacob is not like them — Every nation had its tutelary god; this was its portion; in reference to this God says Deuteronomy 4:19, "He has divided the sun, moon, and stars, to all the nations under the heaven." And the Lord had taken the Israelites to be his portion; for "the Lord's portion is his people," Deuteronomy 32:9, and David says, "The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance,"
Jeremiah 2:1 — CHAPTER II God expresses his continued regard for his people, long since chosen, 1-3. He then expostulates with them on their ungrateful and worse than heathen return to his regard, 4-11; at which even the inanimate creation must be astonished, 12, 13. After this their guilt is declared to be the sole cause of the calamities which their enemies had power to inflict on them, 14-17. They are upbraided for their alliances with idolatrous
Lamentations 4:22 — Verse Lamentations 4:22. The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion — On the contrary: Rejoice, O Jerusalem, for thy captivity will soon end; thy sufferings are nearly completed; thou shalt soon return to thy own land: but he will visit thy
Ezekiel 19:4 — Verse Ezekiel 19:4. The nations also heard of him — The king of Egypt, whose subjects were of divers nations, marched against Jerusalem, took Jehoahaz prisoner, and brought him to Egypt. Thus -He was taken in their pit — Here is an allusion to those trap-pits
Micah 1:3 — Verse Micah 1:3. For, behold, the Lord cometh forth — See this clause, Amos 4:13. He represents Jehovah as a mighty conqueror, issuing from his pavilion, stepping from mountain to mountain, which rush down and fill the valleys before him; a consuming fire accompanying him, that melts and confounds every hill and dale, and blends
Micah 6:4 — Verse Micah 6:4. I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt — Where you were slaves, and grievously oppressed; from all this I redeemed you. Was this a small benefit? I sent before thee MOSES, my chosen servant, and instructed him that he might be your leader
Zechariah 14:21 — Verse Zechariah 14:21. Yea, every pot in Jerusalem — "The utensils of the Jews shall be treated as holy, and the worshippers shall use them reverently. The idea of preparing food in them (they that - seethe therein) is taken from the custom of feasting after sacrifice.
Matthew 17:22 — παραδιδοσθαι should be here translated delivered, or delivered up, not betrayed and that the agency, in this case, should be referred to God, not to Judas. Jesus was delivered up, by the counsel of God, to be an atonement for the sin of the world. See Acts 4:27-28. Against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed to do what thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done, Herod and Pontius Pilate-were gathered together.
Matthew 18:26 — with me — μακροθυμησον επ' εμοι, be long-minded towards me - give me longer space. The means which a sinner should use to be saved, are,1. Deep humiliation of heart - he fell down.2. Fervent prayer.3. Confidence in the mercy of God - have patience.4. A firm purpose to devote his soul and body to his Maker - I will pay thee all.A sinner may be said, according to the economy of grace, to pay all, when he brings the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus to the throne of justice, by faith; thus offering an equivalent
Matthew 20:27 — minister of Christ is not to consider himself a lord over Christ's flock.2. He is not to conduct the concerns of the Church with an imperious spirit.3. He is to reform the weak, after Christ's example, more by loving instruction than by reproof or censure.4. He should consider that true apostolic greatness consists in serving the followers of Christ with all the powers and talents he possesses.5. That he should be ready, if required, to give up his life unto death, to promote the salvation of men.
Matthew 8:1 — CHAPTER VIII. Great multitudes follow Christ, 1. He heals a leper, 2-4. Heals the centurion's servant, 5-13. Heals Peter's wife's mother, 14, 15; and several other diseased persons, 16, 17. Departs from that place, 18. Two persons offer to be his disciples, 19-22. He and his disciples are overtaken with a tempest, which
Mark 1:26 — Verse 26. And when the unclean spirit had torn him — And had thrown him down in the midst, Luke 4:35, και σπαραξαν, and convulsed him. Never was there a person possessed by an unclean spirit who did not suffer a convulsion, perhaps a total ruin of nature by it. Sins of uncleanness, as the apostle intimates, are against the body; they sap the foundation
Mark 2:26 — Abiathar, אב ab, father, understood; and Abiathar was called Abiathar Ahimelech, בן ben, son, understood. Probably they both officiated in the high priesthood; and the name of the office was indifferently applied to either.Shew-bread — See Matthew 12:4.
Luke 10:31 — who, from the nature of their office, were most obliged to perform works of mercy; and from whom a person in distress had a right to expect immediate succour and comfort; and their inhuman conduct here was a flat breach of the law, Deuteronomy 22:1-4.
Luke 24:37 — seen a spirit. — But if there be no such thing as a disembodied spirit, would not our Lord have shown them their error? Instead of this, he confirms them in their opinion, by saying, A spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have, Luke 24:39; therefore he says, handle me and see me. They probably imagined that it was the soul only of our blessed Lord which they saw; but they were soon fully convinced of the identity of his person, and the reality of his resurrection; for,1. They saw
Luke 6:13 — their commission from the great Head of the Church. And3. Because, as he had sent them, he continued to accompany their preaching with the power of his Spirit. These three things always unite in the character of a genuine apostle. See on Matthew 10:1-4.
John 7:4 — Verse John 7:4. No man that doeth any thing in secret, c.] They took it for granted that Christ was influenced by the same spirit which themselves felt and that therefore he should use every opportunity of exhibiting himself to the public, that he might get into repute;
John 8:35 — the son, the legitimate son, has a right. He can make any servant of the family free, though no slave can. He can divide or bestow the inheritance as he pleases. Our Lord seems here to refer to the sending away of Ishmael, mentioned, Genesis 21:10-14. Only those who are genuine children can inherit the estate. If sons, then heirs: heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ: Galatians 4:21-31; Romans 8:17; and see Bishop Pearce's Paraphrase.
