1 Kings 2:8 — Verse 1 Kings 2:8. Thou hast with thee Shimei — See on 2 Samuel 16:5, c., and the notes on 2 Samuel 19:18-23.
2 Kings 17:5 — Verse 2 Kings 17:5. Besieged it three years. — It must have been well fortified, well provisioned, and well defended, to have held out so long.
1 Chronicles 12:23 — Verse 1 Chronicles 12:23. And came to David to Hebron — That is, after the death of Ish-bosheth, Saul's son. See 2 Samuel 4:5.
2 Chronicles 5:3 — Verse 2 Chronicles 5:3. The feast — "That is, the feast of tabernacles, which was held in the seventh month." - Targum. See 1 Kings 8:2.
Proverbs 5:23 — Verse Proverbs 5:23. He shall die without instruction — This is most likely, and it is a general case; but even these may repent and live.
Jeremiah 3:5 — Verse Jeremiah 3:5. Will he reserve his anger for ever? — Why should not wrath be continued against thee, as thou continuest transgression against the Lord?
Jeremiah 35:5 — Verse Jeremiah 35:5. Pots full of wine, and cups — The cups were to draw the wine out of the pots, in order to drink it.
Daniel 10:5 — Verse Daniel 10:5. Clothed in linen — The description is intended to point out the splendour of the garments.Gold of Uphaz — The same as Ophir.
Hosea 2:5 — Verse Hosea 2:5. That give me my bread — See the note on Jeremiah 44:17-18, where nearly the same words are found and illustrated.
Zechariah 5:4 — Verse Zechariah 5:4. Into the house of him — Babylon, the house or city of Nebuchadnezzar, who was a public plunderer, and a most glaring idolater.
Matthew 8:5 — Verse Matthew 8:5. Capernaum — Matthew 4:13; Matthew 4:13.A centurion — εκατονταρχος. A Roman military officer who had the command of one hundred men.
Mark 5:2 — Verse Mark 5:2. A man with an unclean spirit — There are two mentioned by Matthew, who are termed demoniacs. Mark 1:23; Mark 1:23.
Luke 3:16 — Verse Luke 3:16-17. On these verses see Matthew 3:11-12, and Mark 1:7-8, and particularly Clarke's note on "John 3:5".
Luke 6:9 — Verse Luke 6:9. I will ask you one thing — I will put a question to you. See note on Mark 3:4; Mark 3:5.
Acts 5:9 — Verse Acts 5:9. To tempt the Spirit of the Lord? — So the Holy Ghost, God, and the Spirit of the Lord, are the same person.
Judges 5:13 — Verse Judges 5:13. Make him that remaineth — This appears to be spoken of Barak, who is represented as being only a remnant of the people.
Revelation 22:5 — Verse Revelation 22:5. There shall be no night there — See the 23d and 25th verses of the preceding chapter. Revelation 21:23; Revelation 21:25
Revelation 4:5 — Verse Revelation 4:5. Seven lamps of fire — Seven angels, the attendants and ministers of the supreme King. See Revelation 1:4, and the note there.
1 Samuel 23:5 — Verse 1 Samuel 23:5. Brought away their cattle — The forage and spoil which the Philistines had taken, driving the country before them round about Keilah.
2 Samuel 5:3 — Verse 2 Samuel 5:3. They anointed David king — This was the third time that David was anointed, having now taken possession of the whole kingdom.
