2 Kings 18:8 Verse 2 Kings 18:8. From the tower of the watchmen — See the same words, 2 Kings 17:9. It seems a proverbial mode of expression: he reduced every kind of fortification; nothing was able to stand before him.
2 Kings 9:14 Verse 2 Kings 9:14. Joram had kept Ramoth-gilead — The confederate armies appear to have taken this city; but they were obliged to watch their conquests, as they perceived that Hazael was determined to retake it if possible.
2 Kings 9:25 Verse 2 Kings 9:25. Cast him in the portion of the field — This was predicted, 1 Kings 21:0; and what now happened to the son of Ahab is foretold in 1 Kings 21:29 of that chapter.
2 Chronicles 3:9 Verse 2 Chronicles 3:9. The weight of the nails was fifty shekels — Bolts must be here intended, as it should be preposterous to suppose nails of nearly two pounds' weight. The supper chambers — Probably the ceiling is meant.
Proverbs 4:9 Verse Proverbs 4:9. A crown of glory — A tiara, diadem, or crown, shall not be more honourable to the princely wearer, than sound wisdom-true religion-coupled with deep learning, shall be to the Christian and the scholar.
Proverbs 9:14 Verse Proverbs 9:14. For she sitteth at the door of her house — Her conduct here marks at once her folly, impudence, and poverty. See above on Proverbs 7:6, &c., where the reader will find a similar character.
Ecclesiastes 10:9 Verse Ecclesiastes 10:9. Whoso removeth stones — This verse teaches care and caution. Whoever pulls down an old building is likely to be hurt by the stones; and in cleaving wood many accidents occur for want of sufficient caution.
Luke 10:9 Verse Luke 10:9. The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. — εφ υμας, is just upon you. This was the general text on which they were to preach all their sermons. See it explained, Matthew 3:2.
Luke 18:9 Verse Luke 18:9. Despised — εξουθενουντας, Disdained, made nothing of others, treated them with sovereign contempt. Our Lord grants that the Pharisees made clean the outside: but, alas! what pride, vain glory, and contempt for others, were lodged within!
John 12:5 Verse John 12:5. Three hundred pence — Or denarii: about 9£. 13s. 9d. of our money; reckoning the denarius at 7 3/4d. One of my MSS. of the Vulgate (a MS. of the 14th century) reads, cccc denarii.
Acts 11:25 Verse Acts 11:25. To Tarsus, for to seek Saul — The persecution raised against him obliged him to take refuge in his own city, where, as a Roman citizen, his person was in safety. See Acts 9:29-30.
