Genesis 4:19 — Verse Genesis 4:19. Lamech took - two wives — He was the first who dared to reverse the order of God by introducing polygamy; and from him it has been retained, practised, and defended to the present day.

2 Chronicles 9:25 — Verse 2 Chronicles 9:25. Four thousand stalls for horses — 1 Kings 4:26, where the different numbers in these two books are considered. The Targum, instead of four thousand, has ארבע מאה arba meah, four hundred.

Psalms 128:4 — Verse Psalms 128:4. Thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. — A great price for a small consideration. Fear God, and thou shalt have as much domestic good as may be useful to thee.

Psalms 64:4 — Verse Psalms 64:4. That they may shoot in secret — They lurk, that they may take their aim the more surely, and not miss their mark.Suddenly — When there is no fear apprehended, because none is seen.

Psalms 95:4 — Verse Psalms 95:4. In his hand are the deep places of the earth — The greatest deeps are fathomed by him.The strength of the hills is his also. — And to him the greatest heights are accessible.

Proverbs 4:24 — Verse Proverbs 4:24. A froward mouth — Beware of hastiness, anger, and rash speeches.And perverse lips — Do not delight in nor acquire the habit of contradicting and gainsaying; and beware of calumniating and backbiting your neighbour.

Ecclesiastes 4:2 — Verse Ecclesiastes 4:2. Wherefore I praised the dead — I considered those happy who had escaped from the pilgrimage of life to the place where the wicked cease from troubling, and where the weary are at rest.

Jeremiah 16:4 — Verse Jeremiah 16:4. They shall die of grievious deaths — All prematurely; see Jeremiah 14:16.As dung upon the face of the earth — See Jeremiah 8:2.Be meat for the fowls — See Jeremiah 7:33.

Jeremiah 52:24 — Verse Jeremiah 52:24. The second priest — 2 Kings 25:18.The three keepers — The priests who stood at the door to receive the offerings of the people, see 2 Kings 20:9; 2 Kings 23:4.

Zechariah 8:20 — Verse Zechariah 8:20. There shall come people — Similar promises to those in Isaiah 2:3 and in Micah 4:1-2. Many Gentiles, as well as Jews, will then be found devoting themselves to the Lord.

Mark 8:12 — Verse Mark 8:12. And he sighed deeply in his spirit — Or having deeply groaned - so the word αναστεναξας properly means. He was exceedingly affected at their obstinacy and hardness of heart. See Matthew 16:1-4.

1 Timothy 3:12 — Verse 12. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife — This is the same that is required of the bishops. See notes on 1 Timothy 3:2; "1 Timothy 3:4"; and "1 Timothy 3:5".
