Genesis 16:7 — 16:12. All this shows a prescience which is proper to God alone.2. Hagar considers the person who spoke to her as God, calls him אל El, and addresses him in the way of worship, which, had he been a created angel, he would have refused. See Genesis 19:10; Genesis 22:9.3. Moses, who relates the transaction, calls this angel expressly JEHOVAH; for, says he, she called שם יהוה shem Yehovah, the NAME of the LORD that spake to her, Genesis 16:13. Now this is a name never given to any created being.4.

Exodus 34:9 — Verse Exodus 34:9. O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us — The original is not יהוה Jehovah, but אדני Adonai in both these places, and seems to refer particularly to the Angel of the Covenant, the Messiah. Genesis 15:8.

Judges 13:9 — Verse Judges 13:9. The angel of God came again — This second appearance of the angel was probably essential to the peace of Manoah, who might have been jealous of his wife had he not had this proof that the thing was of the Lord.

Judges 19:9 — Verse Judges 19:9. The day groweth to an end — חנות היום chanoth haiyom, "the day is about to pitch its tent;" that is, it was near the time in which travellers ordinarily pitched their tents, to take up their lodging for the night.

Judges 8:9 — Verse Judges 8:9. I will break down this tower. — Probably they had not only denied him, but insultingly pointed to a tower in which their chief defense lay; and intimated to him that he might do his worst, for they could amply defend themselves.

1 Samuel 9:11 — Verse 1 Samuel 9:11. Young maidens going out to draw water — So far is it from being true, that young women were always kept closely shut up at home, that we find them often in the field, drawing and carrying water, as here.

2 Samuel 11:9 — Verse 2 Samuel 11:9. Slept at the door — That is, in one of the apartments or niches in the court of the king's house. But in Bengal servants and others generally sleep on the verandahs or porches in face of their master's house.

2 Samuel 3:9 — Verse 2 Samuel 3:9. Except, as the Lord hath sworn to David — And why did he not do this before, when he knew that God had given the kingdom to David? Was he not now, according to his own concession, fighting against God?
