Genesis 7:4 — entering the ark, in embarking the mighty troop, for whose reception ample provision had been already made.Forty days — This period became afterwards sacred, and was considered a proper space for humiliation. Moses fasted forty days, Deuteronomy 9:9; Deuteronomy 9:11; so did Elijah, 1 Kings 19:8; so did our Lord, Matthew 4:2. Forty days' respite were given to the Ninevites that they might repent, Jonah 3:4; and thrice forty (one hundred and twenty) years were given to the old world for the same
1 Chronicles 9:13 — Verse 1 Chronicles 9:13. And their brethren — What a prodigious number of ecclesiastics to perform the Divine service of one temple! no less than one thousand seven hundred and eighty able-bodied men! and this number is reckoned independently of the two hundred and twelve porters who served at the gates of the house of the Lord, 1 Chronicles 9:22.
Leviticus 9:6 — Verse Leviticus 9:6. And the glory of the Lord shall appear — God shall give the most sensible signs of his presence among you; this he did in general by the cloud on the tabernacle, but in this case the particular proof was the fire that came out from before the Lord, and consumed the burnt-offering; see Leviticus 9:23-24.
Leviticus 9:7 — Verse Leviticus 9:7. Make an atonement for thyself — This showed the imperfection of the Levitical law; the high priest was obliged to make an expiation for his own sins before he could make one for the sins of the people. See the use made of this by the apostle, Hebrews 5:3; Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 9:7.
Ecclesiastes 9:9 — Verse Ecclesiastes 9:9. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest — Marry prudently, keep faithfully attached to the wife thou hast chosen, and rejoice in the labour of thy hands. Some understand this as the words of the libertine objector: "Live joyfully with the woman whom thou lovest best." But this does not comport so well with the scope of the place.
Mark 2:16 — Verse Mark 2:16. Sinners — By αμαρτωλοι, the Gentiles or heathens are generally to be understood in the Gospels, for this was a term the Jews never applied to any of themselves, Matthew 9:10; Matthew 9:10.How is it that he eateth — Some very good MSS., several versions, with Chrysostom and Augustin, read, Why doth YOUR MASTER eat?
Mark 2:3 — Verse Mark 2:3. One sick of the palsy — A paralytic person.Matthew 9:2; Matthew 9:2, &c.Borne of four. — Four men, one at each corner of the sofa or couch on which he lay: this sick man appears to have been too feeble to come himself, and too weak to be carried in any other way.
Acts 9:21 — Verse Acts 9:21. Is not this he that destroyed them — οπορθησας. The verb πορθειν has three acceptations in the Greek writers:1. To treat one as an enemy, to spoil him of his goods.2. To lead away captive, to imprison.3. To slay.Paul was properly πορθων, a
Romans 2:28 — Verse 28. For he is not a Jew — A genuine member of the Church of God, who has only an outward profession.Neither is that circumcision — Circumcision is a rite which represents a spiritual thing, viz. the change and purification of the heart, as may be seen, Jeremiah 4:4, Jeremiah 4:6, Jeremiah 4:10; Jeremiah 9:26; Ezekiel 44:7, Ezekiel 44:9.
Philippians 4:16 — Verse 16. For even in Thessalonica — While labouring to plant the Church there, he was supported partly by working with his hands, 1 Thessalonians 2:9; 2 Thessalonians 3:7-9; and partly by the contributions sent him from Philippi. Even the Thessalonians had contributed little to his maintenance: this is not spoken to their credit.
Revelation 9:10 — Verse Revelation 9:10. They had tails like unto scorpions — This may refer to the consequences of their victories. They infected the conquered with their pernicious doctrines.Their power was to hurt men five months.] The locusts make their principal ravages during the five summer months. But probably these may be prophetic months, as above, in Revelation 9:5-150 years.
1 Samuel 16:18 — army;3. Fights with and kills Goliath;4. Is received into the king's court,5. Contracts a friendship with Jonathan;6. Incurs Saul's jealousy;7. Retires to his father's house;8. Is after some time sent for by Saul to sooth his melancholy with his harp;9. Again excites Saul's jealousy, who endeavours to smite him with his javelin. This anticipation between the 14th and 23d verse comes in, in the order of time, between verses 9 and 10, 1 Samuel 18:9; 1 Samuel 18:10, where the breach is apparent.
2 Samuel 8:9 — Verse 2 Samuel 8:9. Toi king of Hamath — Hamath is supposed to be the famous city of Emesa, situated on the Orontes, in Syria. This was contiguous to Hadadezer; and led him to wage war with Toi, that he might get possession of his territories. For a comparison of the 10th verse, see 1 Chronicles 18:9.
